I used the search option before deciding to post, but I'm guessing this comes up often, so feel free to just link me to preexisting threads, but anyway...

I've been wondering, if I ever wanted to vacation or honeymoon to say, St. Thomas or St. John, or any other 'US Unincorporated Territory,' are any of them gun-owner friendly? Or does one need to render themselves virtually defenseless to enjoy a Caribbean getaway? Also, are there any cruise-lines that respect law-abiding gun owners?

I'm sure they all respect us, but none of them will let you carry a firearm onto one of their boats.

brboyer pretty much nailed it. Wife and I looked into a few places to vacation a while ago and I got a little deeper to look into what options I had to carry. Not only is the answer "no", but "h*** no". There may be some territory out there I didn't query, but it wasn't on our short list of sites to go see. Seaports and cruises out of FL is also a no-no.

We ended up going to Panama City Beach... :)

You can't even bring a gun into the port, let alone onto a ship.

It IS possible to own guns in the USVI, but the rules are strict- not as impossible as NJ or NYC, but there are no gun ranges (used to be one on St. Croix)

Crime is fairly high on St. Thomas and St. Croix, but St. John is very safe and is a wonderful place to vacation - try Gallows Point if you cannot afford Caneel Bay

Remember, these folks pay US income taxes but are not allowed to vote in national elections - a little taxation without representation going on

Keep in mind that all cruise ships operating from the are foreign flag vessels which makes them a little piece of that country. Do you think they will let you carry a gun in the Bahamas or Liberia where most cruise ships are registered, Have crimes happened on cruise ships? Yes. Is it common or something to worry about? No. If you feel you can't be without a firearm never leave your home.

When you are on shore just let your judgement prevail. If it looks like you shouldn't be someplace, leave. This has worked for me all over the world and I've never been a crime victim overseas.

Thanks for keeping your money here at home....;), but that sure is a shame not to go somewhere because you can't carry a gun 24/7 - you and your wife are missing out on some really nice places in the Carib.

I have been on over half the islands, gone off the beaten path, taken taxis to and through what some might consider a slum, yet never felt threatened or worried because I was not carrying a gun - same goes for cruise ships - everyone there is there to have a good time, not trying to rob, rape or kill folks

I have no desire to travel in a country/territory where the criminal element has a virtual monopoly on deadly force.

Just my .02,

That would rule out about 1/3 of the states here at home in a lot of locales......Maybe if you experienced other cultures, you would come to understand that most folks in those islands really are nice folks, not like the folks that are allowed out of jail here

oneounceload,

We may still yet go, it was just that we got more bang for our buck staying close to home. We're actually looking to plan a trip to the Cayman Islands soon.
