Good God, i just seen these rounds. Other then a .50 cal I haven't seen anything like it. What game would this be for, just curious.

I shot one last time i was at the range, 180 grain barnes XLC chrono'd at somewhere around 3800 FPS man did they have some knockdown power, I shot the 500 yard ram silhouette it has about a 200lb concrete anchor and it tilted it quite a ways. They guy had 2 guns in 30-378 a ruger no. 1 with some custom barrel and a weatherby accumark they both had mercury recoil reducers, the accumark had a brake.

My friends in Montana use "them" (two of the Weatherby's) for long range
Elk and Mule Deer. Long range is 500 to 700 yards. So far they've only
taken Mule Deer with them. The Elk are smart enough NOT to come out of
the woods. ;)
I was think of getting one for 1000yard shooting but at $85 for a box of shells, even if you do reload, the price is high.

30-378

180s at 3800 fps... I would have to call BS on that one.... If true the shooter better be VERY careful shooting that load!! I could be wrong but I would have to see it. Was the barrel 40 inches long???

I agree with the numbers posted in the link above (very good source for load data), you will see they did not get to 3400 with the 180s although 3400 is possible and I am sure a lot of people get that from the 30-378... that is no where near 3800.

yea I thought that was kinda squirrelly, I didnt want to argue with his chronograph but 3800 did seem somewhat fast. The reason I didnt say anything is because this guy blew up the bolt face on his savage 22-250 using some mixture of powders to get it to go 5100 fps (or so he said.). anyhow sorry for the false report I should've looked for ballistics beyond his chronograph.

The primary thing a .30-378 is good for is erroding throats. It is just about worthless as a hunting round in my opinon. It's just to much velocity to be usefull under practicle hunting conditions.

Anyone who goes out and tries to shoot deer and elk at 5-700 yards is an unethical shooter of and primarily wounder of game. This person does not deserve the title "Hunter".

You can easily get close to 3600fps from 180gr bullets in the 30-378 (3800 with 150's). The factory recommendations are on the lighter side. I've seen 120's come out of my 7STW at 3750fps and 140's at 3460 is my standard hunting load (yes, they are both above published max, but are not showing pressure signs in my gun). The case of the 30-378 is much larger in comparison. The 30-378 is using the same case as the 460 Weatherby. It is one helluva overbore and willburn powder the whole way out he barrel to get that speed. You will need at least 27" of barrel and 30" is better. To get that kind of speed you will eat a barrel every 1500-2000 rounds.

Lazzeroni calibers are even faster. Lazzeroni

Your primary question was "What is the usage for a 30-378." You can most certianly hunt with it. I recommend going over to longrangehunting.com and reading some of the boards on this round, those boys live for longe range. On the other hand, i was checking into having one built for myself last year by a smith. It was going to be for long range target primarely. If you check out Arizona Ammunition, you can get a special barnes 150gr bullet, that is shaved down just a hair, they have gotten it up to 3945fps. Thats FAST. So to answer your question, Hunting and Target Shooting are its uses. Better reload though, because it could drain your checkbook otherwise to be able to afford to shoot it.
