This is one of those times when, twenty years from now, you'll get to tell people that you had the chance to buy these pistols for $379 each.
Thing is, the GP100 (or some incarnation) will likely still be available at that point.

The Mod. 19 is a vanishing breed, though.

D-man,

you did the right thing:) and you did well, too, in todays market. I expect S&W pre-lock guns to still appreciate in value.

On the other hand, the GP100 is a nice gun and if, or rather when, Ruger will start adding locks to all of their revolvers, Ruger pre-locks will collect a premium, too:D

I had a similar choice not too long ago - a Smith 66-1 and GP100 , both 4" and stainless. The GP was in excellent shape and $379 while the Smith was on an auction and decided to max my bid out at $400. Ended up winning the 66-1 and am really pleased with the condition, it shoots great and is the best handling revolver I have ever owned!

I think you will find the Smith was the right choice too. Not knocking the Ruger at all , actually owned a GP100 at one time. Like many others said , the older pinned/recessed Smiths are harder to find while the GP100 is going to be easy to find.

The S&W will have a better trigger, but that GP100 can be beaten up and take anything you want to feed it without problem for sure.

Was able to hit the range today, and it shot great (.38 specials only). The DA trigger is a little heavier than I had with my other 19 or current 66, but it is smooth. The SA is very light, on par with the other 19 I had.

Here's a quick picture:

The rubber grips are very comfortable - they are Pachmayer Grippers (think older since no medallion in there), but probably will replace them with wood combat grips with finger grooves.

In all, I'm very happy with the purchase.

^ Thanks.....I posted the picture in the K-Frame thread, and a poster did mention it was a Millett sight. I actually didn't even notice it, and that's probably why it sat in the store for a few weeks (non-original).

I actually like the sight, as it has a white marking on it, which to me is easier to align with the front sight (as opposed to a plain black rear sight).

A P&W classic Smith is worth WAY more than the Ruger, if the condition is anywhere close :).

Which one I'd rather have way out in the field is a different question :).
