Some of you may have followed my thread about buying a used police interceptor in the Roundtable last week.
Here is the update...
I flew on Delta with a handgun in my checked luggage. (see, its gun related). I notified the counter clerk and she advised me to take all of my luggage over to TSA after she gave me my boarding pass. I did so and announced to the agent that there was also a handgun in one of the bags. I watched him open the SigArms factory case, upside down (duh), so the formed foam was of course not in the right place. Anyway, he looked at it and didnt bother checking to see the chamber to be affirmed it was in fact, unloaded. Anyway, it was quick and painless.
So, the flight was ok, a little rough landing and departing in Atlanta where I changed planes to head on to Cleveland.
When I got there, a security officer promptly picked me up to take me to the office where the car was located. This was about a 20 min. drive. I got there, met the seller, and went for a drive. Everything seemed to be like a normal 145K mile police cruiser. About what I expected. Started right up, pretty much everything works. At this point, I am thinking that everything on the trip home will be great.
So, we finish paperwork and away I went. I was thankfully going to meet my inlaws, which was about 125 miles away. It was out of the way, but well worth it. It was nice to see everyone. So, I met my inlaws about 100 miles from where I picked up the car, at a freeway exit. At this point, my father in law got in the car with me and my mother in law is driving behind us following. We get about 10 miles down the road and all of a sudden the left rear wheel locked up and we slid to a stop. I got out and it was obvious the axle broke.
So, we called AAA and waited for a tow truck. I was not armed, because my Texas CHL is not good in Ohio (gun related). The first tow truck, was not a flat bed, so he was unable to tow. We requested another tow truck, which was another 1 hour wait. When he finally got there, it was about 3 hours total. We towed the car to my wifes uncle's house because he has a nice 4 bay garage, that is heated.
We got it apart in about 30 mins and made a list of parts. The axle broke, which meant bad bearing, seal and also a damaged brake caliper mount/backing plate. Of course, this is Saturday night. In Ohio, you just can't get parts on a Sunday! Well, at least all the parts. We did go to AutoZone where we got the small parts and fluids. Monday came and I called the dealer to check stock on the axle and backing plate. They only had the backing plate. So, I called some local wrecking yards and found an axle, for 25% of a new one...50.00. Good deal, but it took them 5 hours to get it out of the wrecked car, so that set me back in more time.
Well, by about 8:00, it was back together and on the road. I drove to my inlaws house, collected my stuff and hit the road. I left their house at 8:30 to start my 1200 mile adventure back to Dallas.
The rest of the trip was uneventful. When I crossed into Kentucky, I pulled to the side of the road and got my pistol from the trunk (gun related). I got in the car, loaded a mag and holstered my gun for the duration of the trip. I stopped on this side of Louisville, KY at around 3:30am. I pulled into a truck stop and slept for 2 hours, hitting the road again at 5:30. Only stopping for gas and food, I made it back home at 5:45pm. I made the trip in about 22 hours, which included my down time to sleep.
So, it went a little south in general, but things seem ok. It cost me about 275.00 in parts, which the seller will be paying half of. It was a sold as is deal, so I can only be thankful he is willing to pay for some of the parts, even though I am still upset about it.
I am home safe and I slept like a baby last night. It was nice to be back in my own bed, next to agirlindallas!
