Some of you may have followed my thread about buying a used police interceptor in the Roundtable last week.

Here is the update...

I flew on Delta with a handgun in my checked luggage. (see, its gun related). I notified the counter clerk and she advised me to take all of my luggage over to TSA after she gave me my boarding pass. I did so and announced to the agent that there was also a handgun in one of the bags. I watched him open the SigArms factory case, upside down (duh), so the formed foam was of course not in the right place. Anyway, he looked at it and didnt bother checking to see the chamber to be affirmed it was in fact, unloaded. Anyway, it was quick and painless.

So, the flight was ok, a little rough landing and departing in Atlanta where I changed planes to head on to Cleveland.

When I got there, a security officer promptly picked me up to take me to the office where the car was located. This was about a 20 min. drive. I got there, met the seller, and went for a drive. Everything seemed to be like a normal 145K mile police cruiser. About what I expected. Started right up, pretty much everything works. At this point, I am thinking that everything on the trip home will be great.

So, we finish paperwork and away I went. I was thankfully going to meet my inlaws, which was about 125 miles away. It was out of the way, but well worth it. It was nice to see everyone. So, I met my inlaws about 100 miles from where I picked up the car, at a freeway exit. At this point, my father in law got in the car with me and my mother in law is driving behind us following. We get about 10 miles down the road and all of a sudden the left rear wheel locked up and we slid to a stop. I got out and it was obvious the axle broke.

So, we called AAA and waited for a tow truck. I was not armed, because my Texas CHL is not good in Ohio (gun related). The first tow truck, was not a flat bed, so he was unable to tow. We requested another tow truck, which was another 1 hour wait. When he finally got there, it was about 3 hours total. We towed the car to my wifes uncle's house because he has a nice 4 bay garage, that is heated.

We got it apart in about 30 mins and made a list of parts. The axle broke, which meant bad bearing, seal and also a damaged brake caliper mount/backing plate. Of course, this is Saturday night. In Ohio, you just can't get parts on a Sunday! Well, at least all the parts. We did go to AutoZone where we got the small parts and fluids. Monday came and I called the dealer to check stock on the axle and backing plate. They only had the backing plate. So, I called some local wrecking yards and found an axle, for 25% of a new one...50.00. Good deal, but it took them 5 hours to get it out of the wrecked car, so that set me back in more time.

Well, by about 8:00, it was back together and on the road. I drove to my inlaws house, collected my stuff and hit the road. I left their house at 8:30 to start my 1200 mile adventure back to Dallas.

The rest of the trip was uneventful. When I crossed into Kentucky, I pulled to the side of the road and got my pistol from the trunk (gun related). I got in the car, loaded a mag and holstered my gun for the duration of the trip. I stopped on this side of Louisville, KY at around 3:30am. I pulled into a truck stop and slept for 2 hours, hitting the road again at 5:30. Only stopping for gas and food, I made it back home at 5:45pm. I made the trip in about 22 hours, which included my down time to sleep.

So, it went a little south in general, but things seem ok. It cost me about 275.00 in parts, which the seller will be paying half of. It was a sold as is deal, so I can only be thankful he is willing to pay for some of the parts, even though I am still upset about it.

I am home safe and I slept like a baby last night. It was nice to be back in my own bed, next to agirlindallas!

Did you get the Ford Interceptor, or the Caprice 9C1?

I have a '94 9C1 with over 200,000 - original engine, 3rd transmission (that I know of).

Very fun car, but the upkeep is awful, something breaks once a month - I keep telling my wife that pretty soonI'll have a whole new car!! :D

Yep, glad you survived.

Also, dude, you need a Florida CCW, it's good in Ohio for non FL residents, I travel to Columbus and Cleveland regularly.

Everyone needs a FL CCW (gun related)

Glad to hear you made it back. What kind of gas mileage did you get? I don't suppose you noticed what happened to gas prices here while you were gone. The gas might cut into your ammo budget.

Wow great story, if nothing happened you'd have nothing to tell your grandkids someday. :D Glad it all worked out and your fortunate the seller paid for half of the parts. And yes definitately get a FL CCW :)

"Rabbit, from now, I no longer drive when I commute, I go on patrol"

I'll bet Dallas can rest easy now.....heck...I know I will. BTW, I'm wearing a Sig 229 right now with 2 spare mags. (Gun related.)

I don't see myself ever buying a used police interceptor. They're just like rental cars, they don't belong to the drivers so whoever is driving them will rag them out pretty bad. Around here they get replaced after 90k mi because they're unreliable after that.

Glad it only cost you $275 and some time to get it back home.

It got 18, 19, and 20 mpg on the trip. Gas is even more expensive up there!

Alduro, what can I say, but I love ya bro!

Wow, 145k miles on a police cruiser is like 290k miles on a normal car. :uhoh:

Was the rear end making some awful noises prior to the axle breaking?

How does one go about getting one of those Florida CCW's? Can it be done if I am not a resident in Florida? Also, what are the advantages of having one?

Go to packing.org I have a NON-RESIDENT Florida CHL and they need the photo, fingerprints, and a training certificate. Cost is $117 and it is good in many states. Good to have if you live in a low resciprosity state like Texas. I can drive anywhere I need to go, except Nevada and Kansas and be legal to carry.

Agreed Fl CCW is the way to go. Available for non-residents and good in most states of the union. Highly advisable, but I've been drinking tequila so don't quote me. :neener:

Disadvantages? There are no disadvantages to a florida non-resident permit. :) (that's somewhat gun related!)

I wouldn't exactly call TX a "low reciprocity" state, we are up to 23 states that we can carry in. If the AG's office keeps it up like they have been lately we will meet or beat FL's 26 before too long.

Next time any one wants to buy a used police car, there is a dealer in Chicago on Irving Park road that deals exclusively in used police cars. It has been a while since I have been by that place but I am pretty sure the cars have a lot less than 145K on it.

Where were you last week........

Loadeddrum when he was purchasing this thing! :)

I'm glad my husband is back - I was SOOOO worried about him driving ALL that way in a broke azz car by himself! :banghead:

Yeah, what RRTX said...although I count 25. ;)

Between my TX permit and my ($20 + photocopy of TX permit) Non-Resident New Hampshire permit (for AL and NH), I am good in 27 states.

All a relatively expensive and more difficult to obtain FL permit would get me is SD, DE, and OH. I suspect that deals with at least SD and OH are in the works.

I also have a 94 9C1, other than the opti, I havent had any problems, its got around 140k on it. Three trannies in 200k is a little odd though. Did you go with junkyard trannies or have yours rebuilt?

When mine croaks I'm planning on a 4L80E, or junking the car since its beat up. I may be picking up another one here soon, however its an LT1 car that was owned by a local department (mine is the L99), tranny is bad. If the body is in better shape I may swap my trans in it.

Someone told me of a P71/9C1 dealer in Manasses(?) VA, but I have't been able to track it down online.

If not for SC and VA, I probably would have just went with a non-res FL permit and not bothered with NC. I still havent bothered with my FL permit, I think NC CHPs are good in 26 states, I dont bother couting. I'm good in TN, SC, and NC, which is where I spend most of my time. I havent even been out of state for a while now...

Ha. I hear so much about opti problems, and its about the only thing that hasn't given me problems on this car.
The trans went on me, and when I replaced it with a used one (got it from a guy who did a T56 six speed swap, how cool is that) and when I pulled the trans in the car, it had the "GM Remanufactured" tag on it.

Check out www.impalassforum.com - lots of good info there.

I'm trying to figure out how to mount a holster to the side of my seat, next to the door, so I can carry comfortably/access easily when driving. (gun related) :D

Man,

I want to get one of those Chevy Caprice thingies, early model and put a bubble gum light on the dash. Then pop a tape (tape = 80's) of Beastie Boys "Sabatoge" in it and do about 110 down the freeway.

So um...Steve, when can I drive yours?

I wouldnt mind having an M6 in mine, I'm just not that interested in the car. I am afterall, a Ford guy. But the price is right on the retired APD car, so if it does in fact have the LT1 in it my 1/4 mile time will probably drop about 4 seconds, lol.

I rarely go to impalassforum.com (rarely as in, once or twice), I've found the NAISSO forums to be very helpful. I rarely post, most of the time I just go to run a quick search.

With a little creativity, a small pistol could be tucked away behind the cover for the ashtray;) I havent put any effort into the project, other than removing my ashtray (okay, I'll admit it, I broke it while putting my CD player in), just an idea that popped into my head at work.
