LEO Trade

I purchased a used police trade gun from Mark, at SGB. Sig 2340, poly gun, frame is marked "Made in Switzerland". Blue plastic case marked "SigArms, 2 grips, 2 mags. Mine looks just like the picture he has posted. Fantastic trigger, +90-95% of Nitron slide finish still left. (Night sights ARE shot) No big deal to me, very nice gun. I am sure at one time there were night sights.

Now...There are purists who only like the Sig Classic series and eschew the polymer frames. No matter to me. I like this pistol enough, that I think I will send in to Sig in Exeter to have the factory night sights brought up to spec.

By the way, the SigArms folks in Exeter, NH, are very nice to speak with.

nothing wrong with police trade ins if your on a budget...never owned one but have close friends who do...minor if any work had to be done to any of them

That's pretty neat because I'm not exactly on a budget but I would like to save the money if I could. And I'm not terribly worried about finish wear as long as it isn't really bad. Is it recommended to replace springs or anything after I get it? (If I get it).

couldnt hurt.. but get it, shoot it, and repeat lol....worry about springs when and if you need them...like anything used its a gamble your probably gonna have to buy parts and what not down the road...otherwise shoot the heck out of it until you need parts

if you dont mind me asking..y a police turn in over a new one if you dont really have a budget...the thing is when you buy new you know what your getting..when you buy used your trusting someone else didnt abuse it..if these guns are still under warranty and have a lifetime warranty like a lot do then there really is no risk get one

Anyways, as to the topic at hand: for the most part, military and/or police surplus guns are a GREAT way to get some good deals on guns. Typically they exhibit some finish wear from holstering, but are typically in mechanically excellent condition.

Yes, they're used, but these used guns in particular are the ones that would be fixed the moment anything went wrong. Also, since they come in in large batches, the prices for these are usually a bit lower than most used guns of the same type would typically sell for.

I have a good friend who got a Sig p220 that was a police trade in for $400. The gun was 8yrs old and had slight wear. He's had it for a few months now and is tickled to death to have it, especially at that price point. Most police trade ins are typicaly only used for yearly qualification and as such won't have had very many rounds through them. I say go for it

OK, just all police trade in's are not the same, Sig usually goes over the trade in's and rebuilds them before sending them out.

now theres a good piece of info involving the original question..assuming its legit..i do not know so i will trust you on it..i would say most companies do since most offer a lifetime warranty on all ther pistols but i can not say this is a proven fact..just what i would expect

I did not know about the band on the grip for the refurbished Sigs (good to know) The one my friend bought did not have that. It was purchased from a LGS who has a lot of police trade ins. This particular one was an SBI trade in, and he was upfront about the age of the gun........regarding the Beretta 92 the same friend has one (Well the Taurus version) He claims it is very reliable ( I'm not trying to say a Taurus & Berretta are the same) But I've seen a lot of the police trade in Berrettas for very reasobable prices depending on their condition. I'd go with the Sig if it was me and they were both used............Good luck with whatever you decide

Taurus buys designs from other companies but use lower grade metal from what I hear...that being said the are fairly durable to the average shooter just don't go shooting +p loads they will wreck a Taurus fast

There seems to be some confusion between SIG CPO pistols and SIG LE trade-in pistols...they aren't the same.

The SIG CPO (Certified, Pre-Owned) are usually LE guns that have gone back to the factory (buy backs) are gone through (replacing parts and springs) and resold. They are usually priced a bit higher, have the red paper band around their grip (new guns have a blue band) and come in a plastic red factory box.

SIG LE trade-ins that are not bought by the factory usually are sold through a distributor to retail shops. They may have been inspected, but not rebuilt and no parts are replaced. They usually will not come with any box as the departments usually threw them away

I've purchased 3 LE trade ins. All S&W 3rd gen guns. Aside from some scuffs on grips and finish wear on the edges of the sights, they have functioned beautifully. Mine seem like they were well cared for, your experience may differ.

I own a SIG P226 and a Beretta 92FS, I bought both as Police trades in's.

The 92FS for $369 in 1996

The P226 for $425 in 1997

Both were my primary carry gun at one time or the other. I've used both for IDPA matches. I still own both and shoot them all the time to this day. If I had to sell all my guns, rest assured those 2 would be the last to go.

They are both great pistols, were great buys at the time and have been solid from day one. Considering inflation and what not, the prices today on trade in's are probally cheaper.

In the past 4yrs I have bought 2 Smith and Wesson Model 10's, 1 Model 15 and 1 Model 66 that were trade in's from Armed Security Companies and the Prison/Corrections System.... Again solid from day one.

If your on a budget, the PD Trade In is a great way to get into a good gun.

They are the best deal there is ! I just got a G17 made in 1996 for $369 and it's internals were virgin!

Okay I think my mind is made up and I'll wind up getting one. Now I just need to figure out which model I want more haha. I just stumbled upon some USP's for $470... Does anyone know any websites that sell used police trade ins like the Summit Gun Broker I originally posted? Thanks.

not off the top of my head but you could probably google it and get multiple websites...most dealers will sell them but they dont always have them in stock

In my experience, Police trade ins are usually mechanically sound whith the only problems being cosmetic. A lot of holster wear, but minimal to medium firing. Most LEOs don't do a lot of shooting in the normal course of duty, so their issue guns are generally fired only during required qualification and practice which is minimal compared to what many shooting hobbyists do. The LEOs I know who are shooting hobbyists generally use their personally owned weapons for their hobby and not their issue weapons. And if they carry a POW on duty, their issue gun rarely gets fired at all.

Yes , what MicroTecniqs said . We shoot our guns twice a year and Lord forbid , in a shooting . I just got a Gen 2 G17 from a Florida Police dept and it is awesome for only $369 !

I know yer talking about bottom feeders but I got a deal on a S&W 66 4" w/holster for $425 that was a TX PD gun. She's pretty enough to put Ahrends on (though I keep the Smith stocks on her for range time) and it'll outlast me. If you can do a thorough inspection prior to purchase all the better. Mine was a local deal so I felt fortunate.
