Found a source for Police Trade-in Sig P226's
At a good price $375. Anybody have any reason not to buy one of these?

Ive fired some police trade ins, mostly Glocks but i havent owned any so i cant tell you about long term, but the ones ive handled have been clean, shoot well, but had lots of holster wear.

I have had police trade-ins in Glock 17, two SIG 229's and a SIG 220. All of them worked perfectly and seemed to fit into the 'carried a lot and shot little' category. If the price is right, go for it.

Most police pistols have been carried much and fired very little, typically just to keep qualified.

These then get a general inspection and refurbishment as needed before being sold into the retail aftermarket.

Very little quality or wear concerns, especially for a SIG. Your worse case may be some slight cosmetic issue that won't affect the function or accuracy of the pistol.

Despite Hollywood, most cops dont go blazing into gunfights, shooting thousands of rounds in a day, so id say they're gonna have a lot of holster wear but the gun will be well maintained with a low round count so i wouldnt worry too much.

The 226's that I've seen at that price require a good bit of clean up, but if you're ok with that, I don't see a reason not to get one. One thing I would make sure to do is do a complete tear down for cleaning and replace all the springs, and possibly the roll pins as well. Let us know how the gun turns out!

Take time to get their return/approval policy in the event it isn't what you had bargained for.

A lot has to do with what department had the gun. Is it a imported cop gun from overseas or is it a US department. IMHO it is always best to inspect them before purchase or buy from a trusted source. I am going to make an educated guess that you are referring to the P226s at Sarco..... They will be rough looking. In my experience take either grade and down grade it by one for example excellent to VG. VG to Good.

As others have pointed out a lot of cop guns are carried a lot but not shot a lot. They will show holster wear and often some minor dings and handling marks but if the internals are good and you are not anal about the exterior they can be great values.

There will always be a few LNIB unissued or very well cared for guns in any batch of trade ins. People always talk about those guns but they are again IMHO not the norm.

In my experience LEO trade ins are often fillthy inside. Even ones that look clean externally require a good scrub out. With a Sig you can full detail strip it or use something like gun scrubber to clean them up.

And you can have the slide refinished for <$50.00.

Often it is not just the slide which shows wear. You are then pushing it into the $150 range + shipping which is not cheap unless you have a local shop that does good work.

At the $500+ price point there are better options IMHO.

It's the best way for those of us strapped for cash to not have to settle on something of lesser quality. My main carry gun is a police trade-in Glock 22. Never a single problem! In fact, this one has the extended slide release and the textured grip, suiting me even better.

I bought a police trade in H&K USP compact .45 for only $450. The finish was a little worn, but other than that is was great. I paid $85 to have it refinished and for a total of $535 it's like a new gun. Not bad for a gun that retails for about a grand. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another police trade in.

Ordered one! The guy at Sarco said they are Israeli Military Surplus. Will let y'all know what it looks like when I see it!

I had a police trade sig 229 and Glock 22. Both were well-used and cheap... $400 for the Sig and around $300 for the Glock. No issues with either. Wish i didnt sell the Sig.

A P226 for $375? If I had $375 to blow on a pistol, I don't think I would even think about it, I'd just buy it.

Now, I wish I had $375...

For that price? Buy it before they change their mind I spent about 600 for my ex-cop 226 but I love it. There's holster wear and grip divots but it shoots like a laser and was maintained by an armorer through it's life.
