I found a used Savage 110 at a LGS today for $299. I've been considering building up a Savage with a used action. have no idea what year it was manufactured, and I understand they redesigned it in 1966 (though I don't believe it is that old). Considering Stevens 200s have been discontinued this might be just what I was looking for to start my project.

Anything I should look out for? I

Nope. Buy it. I look online on backpage.com and find used 110s for 200. I just finished a 6mm06 off one I paid 175 for

I bought a action tap and clean the threads up and square the face but that's it.

I picked mine up locally from armslist for $175. It's an old 110E 270Win destined to be built into something else whenever I get around to it. Keep an eye out long enough and you'll find them cheap.

Check the muzzle crown. It is not like the crown cannot be repaired very reasonably. But it is an excuse to ask for a discount.

Carry a bore light. If you do not have a bore light you can get a Winchester brand bore light at Walmart very cheap. I paid less than $10 for my Winchester bore light. Everyone in the neighborhood has used the light for at least 5 years. I have only had to replace one battery.

I have never seen an old Savage that wouldn't fire. But I have seen a lot of them that needed repair or had a pitted cylinder. Don't think you can reair a pitted cylinder. If you can see the pits or rust in the cylinder the barrel is done.

I got a 40 year old savage in like new condition. It was quite the rifle. 7mag though. Kicked like a hippo. For a long action it was very accurate though and very smooth. I'd say jump on it. If you don't like it sell it to me!

Savage made long actions (110's) for short action cartridges. The lower part of the receiver at rear of the mag cutout will be sized to fit the cartridge it was originally chambered for. Be mindful of this when picking a rifle/action.
