Using a 45 colt die to bell 44 mag?

I'll be buying a 44 mag die set soon, I'm planning on the RCBS set, I prefer their seat/crimp die. However, I like the lee powder/expander die on my turret press. Could I use my existing lee 45 colt die to expand 44 mag?

By the time I also buy a shell holder and lee powder die I find myself just buying two complete die sets. Lee and RCBS.

With the nominal diameter of .44 mag at .429 - .430, and that of .45 Colt at .452- .454, this seems improbable. I think the idea "rcmodel" proposed of a .44 mag expander plug has merit, though.

Lee has a universal expanding die. Really it just flares the end of the case. They are cheap and work well. You won't be able to use it as a "powder-thru" expander (does anybody do that?)

Track of the Wolf offers expander plugs in different calibers to fit all Lee expander dies but they are solid and require the extra step of charging.

I use an RCBS charge master and place the lee red funnel atop their powder die (it fits perfectly... As if that's what it was designed for.)

I was just hoping to save a few bucks- by the time I pick up the shell holder and lee powder die I find myself buying the whole set for a few dollars difference.

Note, I’m not an engineer, so my use of calipers is… my best efforts. All of these dies have been used by me before and made excellent reliable ammo.

I’ve taken measurements of my lee powder through expander dies for the below calibers. The hollow expander insert is where i spent most of my efforts measuring. It is a hollow shaft that has an abrupt step to it where the cone expander begins and then tapers narrower. I measured 1: the tip to tip length of the hollow expander plug 2: the length of the expander cone 3: the inner diameter of the narrowest side of the expander cone (a useless measurement now that I think of it) 4: the widest point of the expander cone 5: the narrowest measurable part of the expander cone 6: the die’s mouth at the bottom where the case enters.

There is a bevel below my #5:, but I’d imagine it would crush the cases more often then successfully expand with that bevel. There is also a bevel above my #4:, but again I think that would also potentially crush cases as it is just below the abrupt step.

I think all of the expander plugs had the same outside diameter otherwise the lee powder riser would not be universal.

Lyman #49 says the inner diameter of a 44 mag case at the mouth is .432”, I don’t see it getting close enough to any of my existing dies.
I wonder if the above linked post #2 44 mag expander plug would work in my 45 colt die? I’ll find out when I finally order the dies, I’ll pop the 44 mag expander plug out and try it in my 45 colt die. The small difference would only be the die mouth opening, if it's different.

At this point the risk/reward for buying a $3 plug with shipping, along with a $5 shell holder has me at the same impasse- just spend the extra few bucks and get the whole set.

Maybe you could buy the Lee 3 die set which comes with the shell holder and a stand alone RCBS seating die.

The Lee set costs $31.99 and the RCBS seating die costs $21.99. ($53.98 total)

That price matches the price of the RCBS 3 die set which is $52.99 without the shell holder.
The Shell holder is $7.99 and a Lee powder through die is $11.99. ($72.97 total)

That might be a good solution that won't cost you more than the basic RCBS die set. (prices from Midway USA)

If all your cases are dead on length then you could try a case with the expander just 'kissing" the case mouth, which is probably around 0.449". If it works on a few and youre careful, then run with it. what are you expanding the case body with?

Update: I ordered an RCBS 44 mag die set. My Lee 45 colt die set already has a shell holder that also fits 44 mag. The 45 colt powder die will not work for belling 44 mag, but it will work just fine as a funnel holder on the turret press for charging cases. I'll watch for spillage, which I don't anticipate, and if there is, swap out one of the belling inserts from a smaller die into the 45 colt die body. My lee rifle charging die will also work just fine as a funnel holder on the turret press for charging cases.

RCBS makes a nice die set, it came with a spacer for the seater die for 44spl/44 mag, and two seater plugs, one for round nose and one for flat nose bullets.

And--the Lee die is not just a powder through/flare die. It is also an expander, which would expand your <.429 sized case to <.452. The expander enters the case before the flare part.

And I thought I was cheap...:D

You can buy LEE's expanding plugs for $3 or so. The 44 Mag should have a similar height and be dropped in the Colt die.

I would buy the whole expanding die for about $12, since there's likely to be a bit of tweaking between calibers.
