I want to buy a handgun for a friend in another state. I'd pay for it on GunBroker and have it shipped to his FFL/LGS. I would never see a 4473 for this handgun. He would fill out a 4473 and take possession of the handgun in his home state. I would never take possession of the handgun.

Legal or not?
Will GunBroker sellers ship to a different address that the purchaser's address?

I searched for threads on Legal but nothing fresh and there was a SCOTUS decision a while back that might have changed the law since those threads were active.

I've done this with rifles and shotguns going to my daughter in California. I haven't tried handguns.

California is tough and most FFL holders don't want to mess with it (there are other states almost as bad).

As you say, the laws are constantly changing and laws will vary from state to state. Your best source of info is probably the Gunbroker FFL holders who deal with this all the time.

Have you signed up at Gunbroker and tried asking them directly for info?

I just bought a gun from gunbroker and they mailed it to a local gun store. I’d think the best course of action would be use the “ask the seller a question” feature. Would seem to me basically the gun isn’t “bought” until the forms and back ground check is completed and the gun transferred.

The ATF Form 4473 section B.9 and question 21.a references "Transferee/Buyer". I don't think there's any distinction between buyer and transferee being two different individuals. The safest and 100% guaranteed legal way to accomplish this gift would be to buy the gun, have it transferred to you, and then have it transferred to him.
