Using reloads to proof my CCW, couple questions...

FWIW, a CCW is not a gun. It is the act of carrying concealed (Carry a Concealed Weapon).

To refer to the gun itself, I might say "my carry gun". I don't know of any acronyms that would communicate clearly what you mean.

Well, ain't that cool! Thanks rc!

Not sure I want to bother with them, but at least it's an interesting "fix" to the "problem" -- such as it may be.

I have seen cannelures probably deep enough to resist setback. Deep enough to feel with the expander plug or bullet base on a single stage loader, at any rate.

I have applied a body crimp for the purpose on 185 gr JHP .45 ACP. The short slick bullet needs all the help it can get.

I've used 4756 in revolver loads and have noted an occasional unburned flake of powder in moderate loads. Could it be that such a flake could have fallen into the chamber from the previous round, and been jammed into the case that experienced the FTE?

Chasing the cause of one in 450 rounds not cycling perfectly is indeed "anal". The real question is whether the problem is chronic and with very similar signs.

Thanks guys!
Sorry I haven't posted to this thread for a few days, wife just got back from her business trip and we took our CHL class yesterday. She got 24 of 25 :D and I was able to place all my shots inside the 8 ring on an extremly windy day so we are very happy with the outcome.
As far as my OP, I found that case in my "from range bucket" , the mouth cracked so that answers most of my questions but still appreciate everyones help/advice very much. I think I need to invest in a better scale as this gs 1500 inspires little confidence. Another range trip today with my reloads and my carry gun and no problems with the 300 sent downrange. Either the case was weak or my charge might possibly have been off due to this scale.
On the hunt for a better scale and I'll be inspecting cases better than I was.

Thanks for all the help and advice!

I used quite a lot of SR4756 and a few others back in the 80's. But when I tried Longshot way back then, I have stuck to it for all my self defense loads. I load for numerous different 9mm's, none have ever had a problem running 100%, with SR4756 or any other powders for that matter. I'm either lucky, or I'm doing something right?

But I'm also a different breed of reloader, as I trim all my brass, I never bell the case mouths, and I don't use any crimp at all. I just chamfer the inside of the mouth evenly so bullets will seat straight, and then seat to desired oal, done. In my minds eye, I feel this method produces more consistent neck tension, it definitely produces maximum neck tension. And since you don't trim your brass, this will eliminate issues with over, or under crimped mouths. I only trim the brass the first time, after that I don't worry about it. But like many others here, you can probably skip trimming AL pistol brass, except that your taper crimp doing more than just removing the bell, or not removing enough of the bell.

gamestalker,

I really like this powder so far, its fluffy and fills most of the case making it pretty hard to even overcharge at max loads in hornadys 9th, which I believe is considered more conservative than the other manuals I have. That said, I didn't have much choice in powders locally that were even listed in my manuals and I've been to pretty much every shop within 35 miles.
I'll be on the lookout for some 231/hp38 as I go along and would like to check out some longshot among others.
I'm not stuck on SR4756 that's just the only powder I could find locally that was listed in my manuals and suitable for my endeavors:eek:
I went back and bought the last lb of SR4756 after looking around for a couple weeks for anything else and having no luck. I now have 2 1/2 lbs of it to work with for awhile and am considering branching out to .380 or .40 but I'm holding off for a bit untill I'm sure I'm doing everything right.

I'll try not belling the mouths on a few tonight, I am very interested in having all the neck tension possible without having to remove the belling. I just like learning, anything that I don't know and even how to do things that I think I know better.

Have you tried the Bullet hole, was just here on Friday, they had a ton of powder on Friday.

Never used that powder but my practice rounds on my 40, 9, and 44 mag are all 231. Another Hodgdon powder to look for would be HS-6, Longshot, Autocomp and WSF.

I have several pounds of AA7 and AA5, 231, silhouette, some power pistol and Longshot. Am still waiting on my 9mm caliber conversion for the 650 but if you want to load some 40, you know how to get a hold of me...Eric
