Using your carry knife?

I realized this morning that I used my little 3-inch Bear and Sons folder at least ten times in every working day. Heck, I use it two or three times just eating breakfast at Whataburger.

How many of you actually use your daily cary knife - and if you use it, how often does it get used?

Well, to which daily carry knife do you refer? I almost always carry 2 and at times more knives. I use my Spyderco delica multiple times daily. I really like my new Microtech mini UDT and use it often. When I am in the woods I almost always carry a fixed blade knife that I use often. I would be surprised if most of us do not use their knives daily.

Just today, that I can remember?:
Trimmed a new band-aid down to size for a cut on my arm this morning when I changed it.
Cut some small weeds in the flowers beds.
Cut some twine to tie a vine to a trellis.
Got the mail and opened some letters.
Cleaned my fingernails around noonish when I got the yard work done.
Opened the plastic seal on a new bottle of ALEAVE when I got the yard work done!
Cut a leaking garden hose off and put a new end on it this afternoon.
Just cleaned my fingernails again tonight while watching the fairly close tornado warnings on TV at 6:00.
And the nights still young!

Looks like I need to clean my fingernails again now too!

I whittle canes, cut fruit, slice salami, open mail, and clean nails. Then after lunch repeat as needed.

If I carry it, I'm gonna use it, and vise versa. I don't see why anyone would carry something without the intention of using it if need be. A knife is a cutting tool, so when I need to make a shorter piece of rope out of a longer one, or the UPS guy drops a package on my porch, my knife is going to get used. I don't remember many days when I didn't use my knife for something, if only opening a package of something in the kitchen making dinner.

My EDC is a lowly SOG Blink---the "money clip" knife. It's flat and it deploys fast with one hand, so I find myself using it all day every day for chores ranging from opening a sack of grass seed to cutting up an apple. It's just plain terrific. Since the advent of the assisted opening knife, I'd not carry anything but.

I tend not to use it as a money clip, however, as it somehow magically transforms twenties into tens, and eventually fives and singles … and then makes them disappear.

Ditto all of the above. A knife is a far too useful a tool to ever be without. At least one is with me at all times and I use one or more knives several times a day.

Thinking more about it tonight.

I have carried the same Victronox SAK in my pocket since at least 1970, or before?
In addition to my EDC pocket clip folder of the month, or year.

I clean it & oil it when I remember too.
But the SAK very seldom if ever gets used to cut anything.
However, the toothpick, tweezers, and screw driver blades get used quite often.

Regardless, I would feel naked without it in my pocket as a back-up knife to my real EDC knife after all these years.

EDC is a folding utility knife, never have to worry about it being dull (pack of blades for $0.97) always razor sharp (obviously) solid stainless steel, easy open and very secure 1 hand lock. (its cheap so if I lose it during a bad day I wont cry)
Cut the tags off of shoes
cut shoelaces stuck in escalator
cut my finger nails
opened the mail
opened several "secure" electronic device packages
Trimmed wires
cut hoses
removed, picked at various small items.
I use it atleast twice a day for necessary tasks dozens of times for amusing myself and taking the edge off boredom.

I carry 2 knives & a micro tool in a old Nite -Eyes belt pouch. It holds everything in a small handy package . I use my knives for cutting open the mail to minor surgery. I carry a diamond hone also. So they stay nice &sharp. They very from time to time, but are usually CRKT, KERSAW or GERBER. I have some ColdSteel & SPYDERCO products that I use now and then. These are fine for my E.D.C. . I have started to check out the BYRD BRAND by SPYDERCO. So far they seem like good knives at great prices from China. SPYDERCO didn't wont poor copies of their knives brought into the U.S.A. so they have the BYRD brand made for them, to their specifications. They use 8Cr13MoV steel which is close to 440 steel
They are worth a look!

Since I run a small guide skiff fishing local waters here in south Florida (daytime it's the saltwater portions of the Everglades, night time it's the urban areas of Biscayne Bay...) my EDC is in constant use. Along with a variety of utility chores (those "super-braid" fishng lines are hard to cut with pliers so my EDC is used constantly when rigging or re-rigging as my anglers tear up their terminal tackle) my EDC is a real safety item on a small skiff. More than one captain has died after being tangled up in an anchor line or after snagging a castnet on the bottom in a hard current... The ability to access a folder, and open it with only one hand is important if you get tangled up and dragged overboard.

Over the years I've been hired to help new boat owners sort out their gear and learn how to fish the backcountry of the Everglades. I always make a point ot telling them that a small handy one-handed opening knife is a very good idea when on the water.... particularly when operating solo. For some years now my EDC has been a full sized Benchmade Ascent (long discontinued). The full sized version makes a pretty good defensive item as well....

By the way I dislike having a folding knife clipped to my waistband or anywhere else. I much prefer my blade to be deep in a pocket where it's much more secure (and just a fraction slower to access). I had to lose a very good Al Mar folder before I learned the hard way that a clipped knife can ride up and away when you're running long distances in a small skiff. My average day on the water will see us cover 65 to 75 miles back into the jungle out of Flamingo...

I use a knife every day and I depend on having a knife in my pocket to use as needed. If it is not there, I feel something is missing. I don't even think about it until I discover that "it" is not there, which is why I now carry "them".

Does the OP feel that using his ultra-tacticool combat slasher for cutting an apple or opening a box will somehow diminish its combat slashiness?

I only ask because run into this attitude quite often; I saw a guy decline to peel an orange for his daughter because his Crawford folder was ''not meant for kitchen duty."

I work in mental health and we are forbidden to carry any type of knife, though every desk has a nice pair of scissors in it.

I have folders in my car at all times and when I get home I clip on my Buck 721 slimline for the afternoon and evening and of course its my constant companion on weekends.

I'll use mine to trim dried paint lines, cut cuticles, strings, open packages, cut paper, you name it. I don't use it for food very often, but may in a pinch. I also love it as a work of art and looking at it and manipulating it open and closed is a relaxing pastime.

As one of man's first tools, next to the stone hammer and fire, a cutting edge is indispensable (I have torch lighters and steel hammers all over too)

The only reason I would be reluctant to peel fruit or use my knife on any food product is due to sanitary reasons. Cutting all the crap I do and keeping it well lubed makes contact with food prohibitive. But if you gotta get that yummy orange in your kids mouth, you make sacrifices. And then you...Clean, cut, clean, lube and back it goes in my little pocketises.

I sometimes carry two, but always a mini gerber multi tool or uncle Henry tri- fold. The other is strictly defensive KaBar folder. The gerber is used for everything anywhere from 3-10 times a day. I've only used the KaBar once for a test shave.

My EDC is a tiny little assisted folder that has a 2" blade. I use it at least half a dozen times a day.

I carry mostly a Opinel #10 in a flashlight holder most days and it seem like I'm always finding a use for it. I maintain the edge with a Spyderco and a leather /cardboard strop.

My edc is one of the Victorinox locking models, i've had it for a long time. IiRC, I bought it in 1988. On a daily basis, the screwdriver blades, corkscrew, and scissors are most likely to see use. The knife blade, which I keep screaming sharp, gets comparatively little use. There's almost always a more appropriate fixed blade in reach. The saw blade? Now, I am not willing to swear that I ever used it.

Precisely why I carry a decent blade. Mine gets used a LOT. There shouldn't be an issue as long as you keep it sharpened.

I find that most days, I use mine several times. A man w/o a pocket knife finds himself in need of one all too often.

thought about this very subject yesterday in fact. My SAK is always with me. The screwdriver gets used so much that is why i have always returned to the SAK as my daily carry. I normally have a folding utility knife with me for box cutting duties at work as well.
Even while hunting or any outdoor work when I carry my dads Buck 110 I still have to keep the SAK with me.
Multiple times a day i use my knife, my kids use it or ask me to use it, and co workers and friends ask for my knife knowing it is always with me.
