I am taking the show "on the road" to Illinois and setting up Utah Permit classes for June. If you are interested in setting up a class, pm me or e-mail for information. The available dates are fast closing, ...

Although Illinois does not honor the Utah Permit, it is honored in many of its neighboring States, and this is a great way to attain some legal rights in adjoining States that the Illinois authorities deny their own citizens. It is not just fun, it is very politically satisfying!

The Utah process does not mandate a range session, so the classes can be held "anywhere"...club, office, range, retail center...even your home!

Warning

Before you sign up with this person, carefully check Utah law concerning what is needed in order for qualification for Utah permit.

There have been recent changes to the law.

Well, that is good advice for any class from any person. However, and you likely did not mean anything personal here, I do take some minor offense with the implication that there is something "not right" here.

The changes to the Utah program are not particularly major except in the instructor certification arena. My certification is good through 2009, and anyone can confirm my current status by visiting the State of Utah BCI web site.

From a student/participant's perspective, the biggest change is that a general familiarity with firearms waiver will no longer be accepted; the practical effect is that the classes must contain a gun handling exercise (not a shooting exercise, but general familiarity with different styles and models). In addition, there is a mandated curriculum that must be followed, and each currently certified instructor has had their curriculum so certified.

The process for instructor renewal is more cumbersome for sure; it now requires a renewal class to be taken in Utah; however, as noted, that is some 3 years away for me.

Permit applicants that have their training done after 7-1-06 also need to have an official seal/stamp on the application form; of course I have that already; further, now permit applicants need to remit their application within 6 months of taking their class.

The fees are also marginally increasing if you have prints and photos done by the Utah BCI (which in the case of non-residents is not a consideration).

So, yes, changes have been made. Good practice is to verify credentials. But, there is no "warning" that has anything to do with my classes.

I received my MN Instructor training and certification from Paul - he's thorough, professional, knowledgeable, trustworthy, and safe. His creds can be checked on Utah's BCI site. No need to worry.

Further, before you post a "Warning" about a fellow member, a little review of his history - posts, profile, etc may have clued you in that your caveat was unnecessary and potentially insulting.
