If possible, I'd like to limit this to Utah residents, or those who live close to Salt Lake City, UT. Thanks.

1. What do you think the most likely SHTF scenario is for our region?

2. Do you think there is anything we can do now collectively to prepare for the worst? Feel free to be creative here. Examples may be something like an amatuer radio network of folks with generators that would meet on a predetermined frequency in case of SHTF.

Moderators: I understand this forum is chalk full of SHTF threads, so if you must close this one, so be it, but I thought a region specific thread would be something new and more constructive.

1. Massive Earthquake

2. Best way to be prepared is by doing food storage and preparing any other way you deem necessary (i.e. generator, Fuel for vehicles, Fuel to heat your house and cook with, firearms, etc.)

Definitely massive earthquake.

This scenario means I-80 through Parley's is compromised, probably Ogden, Logan, American and Spanish Fork Canyon roads as well. Due to the high content of sand and the level of ground water there will be much soil liquifaction. Most of the homes on the benches will no longer exist. Some scientists predict that since the entire downtown area is essentially just one big sand pit, few buildings will remain standing. The Spaghetti Bowl will be compromised, likely destroyed, this limits access to I-80 West. Also I would imagine that Wendover isn't a tactically logical destination. That leaves improvised onramps for I-15 Southbound only, and the freshly escaped prison population in charge of the Point-of-the-Mountain/Suncrest/Alpine/Cabelas area.

Not a pretty picture.

I hope you guys don't mind a fellow from the north popping in, but what about Dugway. I spent some time there, nasty place. Seems to me that you could easily find your selfs glowing in the dark or doing the "Dead Cockroach Dance" from the nasty stuff they keep there.

I spent 4 weeks there, we kept radaic meters on us the whole time. I remember reading about an "incedent" where a cloud of nerve agent leaked out and killed a mess of sheep and sheep ranchers. I know in a SHTF situation, I wouldn't hold much hope for the southern end of the lake.

If it's SHTF in utah, does that mean its a "Shiz hit the fan" situation?

I'm a washington-countyer reporting in. You wasatch folk better not come down and try to steal our cotton. Dixie Militia!! Kidding, of course, we'll trade the cotton for ammo.

But in all seriousness, as the first city between the Los Angeles/Las Vegas corridor of I-15, I often wonder what would happen if something like the hoover dam was blown up or we went into widespread civil unrest in the west/southwest. Southern Utah is the first decent sized place up from Vegas that isn't a huge city, so I wonder what sort of migration we'd see in the event of a major major situation (WW3, terrorist attack in LA or Vegas).

We think we're safe down here, but really, we've got Nellis AFB just down the street, in Vegas, Area 51 and all those compounds just across the border to the west, not to mention all the installations in Tooele and such. Sorta a "Red Dawn" type area, we're surrounded by decent military targets.

Really though, I think the mormon culture would band together pretty quick. We don't have the urban areas and city like Salt Lake, so I am guessing in the event of a "Shiz hit the fan" the community here would be setting up all sorts of organized efforts to gather food and water.

I don't know about the Wasatch Front, but here in Dixie, almost all active mormons have food storage and survival gear packed away. Growing up, I was always confused as to why all my friends families had basements full of water and food storage. Hopefully they cooperate with the rest of us non-mormons, but who knows.

I figure if I need to, I'll disappear into the mountains off of I-15, up by Cedar City, and hide out there until order is restored... and if not, we'll live like mountain men.

#1) At 9 AM on a weekday morning, a 20,000 gallon propane or LPG tank explodes in Roper Yard, taking out the 21st South freeway interchanges, ruptures several adjacent anhydrous ammonia tanks, chlorine tanks and a string of sulphuric acid tanks from Kennecott, and a brisk breeze drives the toxic cloud northeast over downtown and the avenues (including West High).

#2) Same scenario but at Midvale Yard at 2 AM.

#3) Same as #1 & #2 but during an inversion that slows the spread of the cloud but covers a much broader area. Assume all freeways in a 10 mile radius are shutdown within an hour by accidents caused by incapacitated drivers.

1. Earthquake: The usual SHTF gear applies here, I suppose. Mainly food, water, and first aid gear.

2. Tooele Army Depot/ Dugway chemical or radioactive leak. This is a scenario I had overlooked. They certainly store a lot of nasty stuff out there, and all it takes is the right wind direction for a real problem.

A good gas mask/ Potassium Iodide pills, and a rad detector might be a wise addition to the BOB.

I'm in the Avenues area of SLC. I'm planning an evac route, or several evac routes, to escape to my cabin near Huntsville. In an earthquake, this may or may not be feasable. Certainly the major roads would be screwed, but I might be able to take back roads in my Jeep. Maybe Emigration canyon to East canyon?

Well, thanks for the replies. I'd better get back to work.

I'm not from Utah but its my understanding that there is a Mormon rule that members need to store up to a year a food. If this is true and there is a significant event that affects the US and the world, Utah will be better than most.

Besides a local chemical spill or reactor meltdown, earthquake, I'm thinking you’re close to two thing you need to worry about; Yellowstone and Cheyenne Mountain Wyoming. There are a few disaster shows about a mega volcanic eruption in Yellowstone, watch them. I'm not sure how you can prepare for that. If we get into a full scale nuclear war with China or Russia, their prime target will be NORAD. A lot of nuke will be hitting that area and since they need to hit deep there will be a lot of fallout. Consider making plans for a small fallout shelter in your basement.

Well, that WOULD be a SHTF event, wouldn't it? :neener:

Either some massive explosion/ eruption that moves the mountain; or Mohammed decends to Earth in Wyoming, and the mountain moves itself. :what:

When did they move Cheyenne Mountain from Colorado to Wyoming?

Just as a side note.

Potassium Iodide pills
would be of very limited/if any use in case of a radiation leak from storage of RadWaste.

The only think that Potassium Iodide pills due is to greatly reduce the uptake of radioactive Iodine by the thyroid. That is all. The Potassium Iodide pills do not protect you or slow down the uptake of any other radioactive material into your body whatsoever.

Radioactive Iodine is a common reactor by product. IIRC most of the Radioactive Iodine produced have relatively short half lives measured in days(excluding I-129) so there is probably not going to be much Radioactive Iodine in a Radioactive materials leak from a storage site as opposed to a working/recently shutdown reactor.

The Potassium Iodide pills are usefull for their specified purpose. But the specified purpose is only to block absorbtion of Radioactive Iodine.

To the best of my knowledge there is no pill/liquid/treatment that can be taken prophylacticly to significantly reduce radiation exposure/effect to the human body.

I was in Utah early this summer when an outbreak of plague closed one of the smaller state or federal wilderness areas. I don't think plague is a realistic concern with modern sanitation conditions, but how about the doomsday flu epidemic, which would start on one of the coasts or a city with a large international airport?

A note on the Mormon commments, be aware that three of the moderators on this board are Mormon. And I can kill you with my thoughts. :)

When SHTF, since FBMG overlooks I-15 in Draper, I'm going to turn the freeway into a toll road and declare myself Warlord. I'll start taking applications for Evil Minions. We will offer great benefits, medical and dental, plunder, and all the ammo you can shoot.

I look at SHTF as a business opportunity.

Cross me and the next thing you know you'll be hanging from a bungee cord having a chainsaw duel to the death against a retarded guy with a bucket on his head.

:)

If SHTF in Utah, I'm closing I-15 southbound. Thats just what we don't need here in Las Vegas...the return of all the Mormons. :neener:

Religous bashing? Mods, please close this thread. This is rediculous.

No need to close the thread.

The only thing that needs to be done is that the individuals, who think they are sharp for cracking jokes about Mormons, just need to mind their own business, People need to drop their religious prejudices and quit parading their ignorance and bad-taste in jokes.

Clean, you have issues. Even if you meant that as a joke you need to take a long look at yourself. I hope you're not as ignorant as you just made yourself appear.

Anyhow, I don't see why people want to leave Utah if there is a disaster. I live in Seattle and If there was a national disaster or anything like that, I would pack up and go to Utah!

Joke all you guys want, but I've lived in a heavily-LDS area...and if TSHTF that place would hardly notice. While the religion isn't my cup of tea, it seems to my perspective to be as much (or more) a social organization as a religious one. And networking is an absolute top priority in emergency situations, IMO.

I am not a Mormon, but I owe my state of preparedness to my sister and her family that are Mormons. Any Mormons I have met in New England are super nice folk.

I moved to Utah 3 years ago and have found Mormon folk to be some of the hardest working, most honest, most family oriented, friendliest people on Gods Earth.

My girlfriend is Mormon, a sweetheart, and boy can she shoot!

a religion that tells its members to have a one year supply of food and other things that you need (guns and ammo) in a katrina or shtf situation is just about the best thing in this day and age of uncertinty like bird flu, hurricanes tornados and such. plus just like corriea said we can kill you with our thoughts we dont need guns.

plus the mormon girls i have gone shooting with are better than i am and so they are definilty better than jokers who dont know what they are doing with guns.

South Jordan, Utah

Definitely an Earthquake will be at the top of the list.

The Salt Lake City and surrounding areas would be so much more prepared than New Orleans. They also would be very well armed. Looting? Only a fool would loot in these neihborhoods. I dare say that 60% plus of the homes in my neighborhood have multiple firearms. The farther out you move in the country the higher the percentage.
