Kudos, tinygnat219, Kudos.

I think that the details about the "bomb" event will be most entertaining, as well as informative.

The people have a right to know... It is Sunshine Week.

My bet is, the police report will show this whiny sniveling blissninny for what his is. But I am very, very interested to see what the report shows.

I have phoned the editor of the Roanoke Times, Christian Trejbal and the owner of the Roanoke Times. So far no reply. I will go to Roanoke and personally have a discussion with the editor friday if he/she does not phone me back. I have been threatened in the past and have been told by the police to keep a firearm (Va. CCW holder). I really don't like my name and address being made available to every person on the internet. I just hope some innocent person doesn't suffer from the Roanoke Times irresponsible action.

I have the same concerns as you. I actually did speak directly with Meade on monday before this all blew up. I got to her by calling Landmark Communications. When I spoke to them they had no clue that the list had been posted. They contacted Meade and she called me back. We talked for about 20 min. Once we got past the "We have a Right...", and " The people have a right to know..." crap. I told her that Virginia law does not permit the release of crime victims or court witness private information, and that the list contained a lot of those names. I also told the state police the same thing.

After relating a little information about my personal situation as regards threats against myself and my family, she said they would meet and discuss taking the list down or modifying it to remove the street addresses. That was about 11:30 am 3/12. The list went down just two hours later.

Then the "balloon went up" since then I don't think they are going to return any calls on this issue. They are waiting for all of us to wind down and go away. I am glad (and hopeful) that that will not happen.

Trejbal MUST be fired. An example needs to be made here.

Just for the record, if a single person is harmed as a direct result of this publication, or the attempt to demonize CHP holders by equating them to sex offenders, then the speech is no longer protected. In other-words if anyone gets attacked they could be sued if a connection can be made between the attacker and publication.

If you do get through to them, please stress to them that they MUST take responsibility for this act of terrorism, fire a few people, and make a sincere statement of apology for the damage and fear they have caused.

Yea I know dream on. But the least they should do is fire someone. That is what Landmark should be considering.

Keep the posting to their web site going and the mailings to their advertisers as well.

Post to Mark Taylor's columns. He is still letting almost everything through.

Also in todays Potomac News in prince William county there is a news article about the FOIA committee. They are going to study the issue FOR A YEAR!!

Regards

He is out of the office a lot and usually posts in chunks. He is after all the outdoor editor. Of course there is always the possibility that the editor went after him for his support on this issue.:cuss: He has allowed some VERY anti Trejbal stuff onto the list.:fire:

As a lawyer, I think that this is one of the most irresponsible pieces of journalism that I have ever encountered. Freedom of speech is protected by the First Amendment but "... no one has the right to cry fire in a crowded theatre" (to quote a Supreme Court justice). The Roanoke Times has just done the equivalent.

It is entirely foreseeable that criminals might be reading this newspaper, and gaining residential information on where firearms are located. It is well known that they typically get a large share of their guns through residential burglaries. Since many gunowners own more than one firearm, this type of burglary can be quite profitable for criminals. If a criminal burgles one of the residences on the CCW list for guns, then he may now be armed since he knows that there are firearms on the premises, thanks to the Roanoke Times. By providing a comprehensive CCW list in a public forum, Mr. Trejbal and Roanoke Times have put the property and the lives of CCW permit holders and their families at risk.

If any CCW permit holder on this list has his residence burglarized over the next 12 months, then he may wish to retain legal counsel, and file a civil action for negligence against Mr. Trejbal and the Roanoke Times. Since a number of the people on the published CCW list are obviously suffering extreme mental anguish over the potential threat to their safety and to the safety of their families, an action for negligent infliction of emotional distress might also be considered. That's just for starters.

I'm sure that you will be able to find a Virginia attorney who will be delighted to take this case on a contingent fee basis. Call the County Bar Association for a referral.

I already have a lawyer looking into the possibility of both criminal and civil liability on this. One thing I would like to obtain is an injunction to prevent further release of this information until the legislature has time to act. This is the kind of thing other papers may try to "copy cat".

packingdressagerider,

Actually, I FOIA'd the Christiansburg Police Department for the information since they are the ones who took the 911 call and coordinated the VA State Police Bomb squad response. I was told the information I asked for shouldn't be a problem to receive. VCDL gets a copy of it when it gets sent to me and we can go from there.

VCDL has a request of you!

Copied Email Alert From VCDL President Philip Van Cleave to VCDL Members.
His email is [email protected] if you want to respond.

Subject: VA-ALERT: CNN wants to interview 'outed' chp holder

I just got off the phone with Kyung Lah with CNN. She is doing a story on how gun owners were affected by the Roanoke Times publishing a database of concealed handgun permit holders on RT's web site last week. She wants to interview somebody who was strongly affected by that event. Obviously, those of you who are under death threats probably would not want to appear on nationwide television. However, if anybody is angry about what RT did and feels their lives were changed or harmed by it, here is your chance to let other Americans realize the gravity of what the Roanoke Times did. Just send me a quick email with your name / city / phone / why the publishing of that database caused you angst and I will forward on to CNN.

CAUTION!

For those of you comtemplating a call to CNN, I would use great caution in responding to CNN's request. I'm NOT saying it hasn't happened previously, but I, personally, have never read or watched a pro-2nd Amendment piece on CNN. I have seen more than a few pro-gun control/Brady bunch pieces on CNN, however. They are not champions of firearms or gunowners. They may be looking to use somebody. Proceed at your own risk.

Yeah, if you think you want to be interviewed by CNN then you'd better have a PRACTICED and WELL REASONED list of your concerns and reasons.

If you try and do such an interview "off the cuff" you stand a good chance of being "thrown off the cliff" by an experienced interviewer.

Maybe we should start such a list of bullet points here.

Re: CNN

I don't trust the Communist News Network, or sometimes called the Clinton News Network. They are hugely biased to the left. Any interviews they conducted would not be fair.

FNC, now that's a different ballgame.

Re: Tinygnat...FOIA

Tinygnat, I'm looking forward to what ever info you get from your FOIA request. Then it might be interesting depending on what you discover to contact a reporter with one of the Roanoke TV stations.

Roanoke Times Mark Taylor

I spoke to Mark Taylor today. For those who may not know Mr. Taylor is the Outdoors writer for the Times. He is friendly to the cause, and is the only one there that has posted any comments on this issue so long as they were not outright profane (though he understands why some might be profane). He has received some minor pressure for his efforts to let us all speak on this issue, but "nothing he can't handle"

His posting of comments has been reduced by his need to get back to his regular column preparations (he does have other work). He has added a few more posts to the latest of his threads late today.

I am informed that the Times has "noticed" this issue. While some of us might feel that instant action should have been taken bright and early on monday 3/12, (myself included) the Times is a large slow organization.

A source close to the Times has indicated we should all watch them very closely over the next few days, for "interesting developments".

"The game is afoot"

Keep the pressure on!

This Is Too Funny About Trejbal

I got my VCDL alert. The Times weasels refuse to be interviewed by CNN. HA!

VCDL's Gun Dealer Legal Defense Fund -- help fight Mayor Bloomberg's
scheme to cripple Virginia firearms dealers. See: www.vcdl.org/index.html#DefenseFund

I was interviewed about the recent Roanoke Times debacle by Kyung Lah
of CNN on Friday at Vinney's Italian Restaurant in Midlothian. The
restaurant was very hospitable, setting us up in a large corner so
that all the camera equipment could be spread out.

The interview went very well and was done professionally. Ms. Lah
asked some of the questions that were posed by Mr. Trejbal in his
article - such as, "Don't I have a right to know if you are carrying
a gun?"

I had been standing up talking to Ms. Lah for couple of minutes after
I arrived. She looked at me and said, "Since you have a concealed
handgun permit, aren't you allowed to transport a handgun?"

I said, "Yes."

She said, "Er, do you have one in the car then?"

I said, "No, but I have one on my hip."

A little embarrassed for not having noticed, she then looked down and
saw that I was open carrying.

I explained Virginia Law to her about having to open carry in
restaurants that have a license to sell and serve alcoholic beverages
for on-premises consumption.

THE ROANOKE TIMES AND CHRISTIAN TREJBAL ARE HYPOCRITES!

This is TOO good! I asked Ms. Lah if someone was going to interview
the Roanoke Times management and Christian Trejbal (the columnist who
wrote the story about Virginia 'sunshine' laws, and who obtained and
helped publish the CHP holder list).

Ms. Lah said that BOTH Mr. Trejbal AND the Roanoke Times Management
are REFUSING TO BE INTERVIEWED!!!!!!!!

What about all that 'sunshine,' you were celebrating Mr. Trejbal?
What about it Roanoke Times? Surely you would want to lead the way
by letting a little light shine on the damage that you did by
publishing the CHP holder list?

I got a real chuckle when she told me about their refusal.

I guess I have been doing this too long as I wasn't surprised. I
have dealt with people like Mr. Trejbal many times before.

ANOTHER VCDL MEMBER TO BE INTERVIEWED

Ms. Lah is also going to interview a parole officer who had THREE
parolees show up at his residence, one while only his wife and child
were at home! All three admitted to getting his address from the
list published on the Internet by the Roanoke Times.

THANKS TO THOSE OF YOU WHO VOLUNTEER THEIR STORIES

Thanks to those who volunteered to be interviewed. I shared your
stories with Ms. Lah and some of your emails will probably be used in
the story. Ms. Lah assured me that your name and other private or
identifying information will be redacted when emails are shown on
screen. Only the part of the email that talks about how your life
has been endangered will be highlighted and visible to make the point.

WATCH THE PAULA ZAHN SHOW ON MONDAY AT 8 PM!

The story is going to air THIS Monday at 8 PM EST on the Paula Zahn
show on CNN.

I know they technically didnt do anything illegal, but I think there should be a class action lawsuit against the Roanoke Times for endangering the lives of many people due careless journalism, and not using a reasonable amount caution or common sense when publishing the article, especially with those whose names it WAS illegal to publish.

Re: Suing The Times

They should be sued. In that apology editorial this Sunday, they indicated that nobody has been harmed by the release of that info--that is nobody that they know about. But what about that parole officer whose wife got a visit when he was not there? What about all the vics of domestic violence who were contacted by their abusive ex spouses? When that Parole officer is interviewd by that CNN reporter, I suppose the idgits at the Times will be further enlightened. They will continue in their ivory tower smugness I feel sure.

packingdressagerider,

Apparently, this is a main reason for the delay in the interviews. CNN is trying to gather more stories of people impacted by this database release. On the plus side, I got the Audio recording and the incident reports from my Christiansburg Police Department FOIA request. I am debating posting the phone call since it announces his cell number (it's called being responsible). He has no home phone (Interesting, you'd think he has been through this before) Some info is blacked out, which is expected, but not a whole lot. Once I get the reports scanned, it's going to be posted here and sent to the VCDL so it can be re-transmitted to 5000 plus people. There is no transcript of the 911 call, since they don't normally provide them but the total series of calls is only 7 minutes or so. Fairly boring stuff.

BTW, the correct way to pronounce his name is Tray ball, he confirms it in the 911 call.

Hey Tiny, thanks for all the hard work! You know you CAN FOIA the 911 call if you want. VCDL did that with the Manassas PD and Tony's Seven incident.

RE: CNN Interview & TG's FOIA Request

TG, I'm looking forward to reading the transcript of the 911 call. Should be interesting. Something else, why should any of us care if his Cell phone number is revealed? Did he care about outing the personal info of CHP holders? Nope. Cell numbers are easily changed, but having to move elsewhere if you are somebody who was outed, isn't as simple. About the Interview, I was plesantly surprised. It was fair, which was not something I expected out of CNN.
