The guy hates Roanoke and almost all of southwest VA. Read some of what he has to say about it. John
________
My friends are hardly a representative sample of America. They are more politically aware than most and skew left. Two of them even moved to Canada after the 2000 election.

They are mostly younger, too, and are among the small percentage of Americans with advanced degrees. They are just the sort of people who could boost our economy by visiting or moving here. They long for places to relax and play amidst natural beauty, and we have that in spades.

I tell them it's not as bad as it looks from outside. I have met good people here. There are bastions of progressive ideals in places like Blacksburg, Radford and Floyd. We have outdoor recreation opportunities to die for: the Blue Ridge Parkway, national forests, mountains and rivers. We have bluegrass music and Floydfest. We have wineries. We have some good golf courses.

My friends don't want to hear it. Other places offer the same and welcome them.

Perception is everything, and that is bad news for a region hoping to attract tourists. The character of the community and its politics so turn off my friends that they have no interest in visiting despite everything else we offer.
________

Edited to add a disclaimer of sorts: I was born in Roanoke, but moved away before I was four. I attended Va Tech, aka VPI, in Blacksburg and graduated in 1972. I like the area. And his opinion isn't worth the electricity he wasted writing it.

Before we get too far off track

Attack the argument not the arguer:

'There are good reasons the records are open to public scrutiny. People might like to know if their neighbors carry. Parents might like to know if a member of the car pool has a pistol in the glove box. Employers might like to know if employees are bringing weapons to the office.'

--- Nosy people want to know a lot of things. What of it? What is the issue here? I do not understand.

'And all Virginians have a stake in checking that their government is not making mistakes, for example, by issuing permits to convicted felons. Open records allow the media or any private citizen to check.

--- Okay, true but how is a private citizen going to be able to check records better than the government?

'This is not about being for or against guns.'

--- Okay, good I was worried for a sec.

'There are plenty of reasons people choose to carry weapons: fear of a violent ex-lover, concern about criminals or worry that the king of England might try to get into your house.'

--- Okay for the first part but what does some loony breaking into your house have to do with concealed carry?

'There are plenty of reasons to question the wisdom of widespread gun ownership, too.'

--- But he just said it wasn't about being against guns in the start of the paragraph.

Logic people. Reason wins out of their crazy arguments every time.

There are bastions of progressive ideals in places like Blacksburg, Radford and Floyd.

For those who don't know, these are college towns. "Bastions of progressive ideals" = "Education camps".

My e-mail to C.T.:

Dear Sir:

I probably can not add much to this debate which has not already been said, though I hope to add a new idea in this e-mail.

As you are a journalist you have no doubt been indoctrinated with the idea that social justice is an admirable goal. Too many in your profession are of the opinion that this goal should be sought at all costs.

The people on your "burglar's shopping list" are all of a different mind. They believe that individual liberty is the most admirable goal one can seek - and also that social justice always follows if individual liberty is guaranteed.

Your collectivist attitude has inspired you to strike a blow against individual liberty. For your sake I hope that as we come demanding your job, your collective will value your idea more than its advertising revenue.

My e-mail to the owner:

Dear Madam:

Mr. Trejbal's recent article exposing Virginia concealed handgun permit holders was an unacceptable abuse of the power of the press.

Please research a man by the name of Jim Zumbo. Zumbo was a writer for Outdoor Life Magazine until recently, when within the space of 7 days he found himself unemployed for equating owners of assault weapons with terrorists - in much the same manner as Trejbal equated concealed handgun permit holders with convicted sex offenders.

Most law abiding citizens possess two qualities: we do not appreciate having our reputations unnecessarily tarnished by quixotic do-gooders in the press, and we are aware of the legal avenues available to us to see to it that it doesn't happen again.

You need only check your site's blog about this article to see that nobody agrees with Mr. Trejbal on this issue. A storm is at your door. Your business will suffer far less if you preemptively dismiss Mr. Trejbal and offer a public apology for his actions.

Looks like the comments have been closed - I got an error when I tried to post the reply below.. :(
I'm just building on an idea I got from another High Roader. Wonder how the editors would feel with the shoe on the other foot?

You know, that whole first amendment thing is outdated. I see no reason that just anyone, such as Mr. Trejbal of the Roanoke Times, should be allowed to endanger innocent people with his thoughtless article. I think it is high time the government puts reasonable restrictions on who is allowed to publish, and what they are allowed to publish.
Sporting results, sure... but political articles or editorials? Surely a license and strict guidelines should be required for anyone who wishes to use such a powerful tool.
In fact, perhaps only the government should have this right. Mr. Trejbals' actions amply demonstrate the damage that can be done when an unprincipled, untrained, thoughtless person is allowed to publish in the public domain.

I don't appear to be able to access the list either, or the comments. I did get the following one in just under the wire though:

C. Trejbal posted above:
"Just to clarify a point that runs through many of the posts here...
This is not a first amendment issue. It is a question of what records the state government maintains are open to public scrutiny. Any Virginian, media or otherwise, may ask for and receive a copy of the information posted from the Virgina (sic) State Police without explaining what he wishes to do with it."

If this were true you would have reported that you had obtained the information and that would have been it. To further publish the information is a vindictive and malicious act equivalent to my announcing to everyone I work with that one of our coworkers is gay or HIV positive. After all, that would be useful information in case he were to have an accident and require first-aid.

NO, WE HAVEN'T WON YET.
The list is still up, and the blog looks like it may be just failing on the server side - the entries show up every couple of refreshes.
It's the Roanoke Times, it's probably not beefy enough to handle pissing off the entire pro-2nd crowd in the U.S.
I suggest really trying to read it - hit refresh multiple times, keep doing it all day. Some IT guys will get fuming about not being able to keep things running, and it'll get kicked upstairs that we're breaking the blog.

My wife called the guy and talked to him personally. He doesn't care ... he said if you don't like it get the law changed.

I did email my delegate and suggest that this type of thing is an "inappropriate" use of the public records. Delegate Bell is a strong supporter of gun rights, he's my neighbor, and an overall good guy. I'll be interested to hear his response.

he said if you don't like it get the law changed.

While I agree that the law needs to be changed, that fact does not release him from his responsibility for the actions he took.

To sum up his reasoning.

If someone has a CCW they need to be spotlighted and held accountable for that choice... even if they are obeying the law. It's not the law, it's those darn CCW holders.

BUT

If he (Mr. Trejbal) brings an issue to light in a manner calculated to cause harm it's not Mr. Trejbal's fault, it's the fault of a bad law.

Nah, I don't see any double standard here.

There's an interesting thought - slashdotting the server. Sort of a technological zumboing.

And judging by a bunch of those town names being misspellings, typos, or some such, it seems to me that Virginians could probably introduce more benefits to the database system via accidental transposition of letters in their town names or surnames.

He is right about changing the law.

I fully agree with changing the law we need to repeal the requirements for the government to maintain a list. Or the requirement to even get a license. Concealed carry should be a right.

I wonder how many RT employees are on the list or if they were edited out? I wonder if they will add them in as they acquire them?

Keep in mind these are the same rules that allowed us to find the hypocrites of Rosie, Feinstein and others.

Oh and I can not see any of the posts and it looks closed but the list is still up.

I just called Landmark Communications, the parent company of The Roanoke Times and they are ABUZZ to say the least. The president, R. Bruce Bradley, has been fielding calls all morning over this editorial. The switchboard operator was more than a little annoyed with the number of calls they are receiving. Why not add to their pleasure on this beautiful Virginia afternoon???? It's a toll-free number....

Landmark Communications
150 W. Brambleton Ave
Norfolk, VA 23510

ph: 800-446-2004

fax: 757-664-2165

Bradley was tied up with these phones calls, so I left a voicemail requesting a return call from him. You could also try Stephen Peters, the Chief Information Officer. Landmark also owns another VA paper, The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk. Calling the advertisers in that paper will help, too, once we work our way through Roanoke.

^^^^ HA! Too funny! They're loving us gun nuts right about now. I'm researching the contact information of the actual owner of Landmark Communications. He lives in Virginia Beach. I'll post his info when I find it.

What do you think the best thing to say is for an out of state "protester" such as myself? I noticed most of you are in VA and can state you will not purchase from their advertisers anymore, but I am not from VA and would still like to make some sort of impression on them? What do you think the best way to about this would be when calling them?

That you are concerned about the precident set by that reporter's actions?

That you have good friends (I'll be your friend <grin>) who may have been put in danger by this irresponsible action.

I dunno, maybe others can come up with some more stuff.

The info below is from their website. They own the Weather Channel, weather.com, etc!!! HAHA!
Pick whatever side of their business you'd like to boycott and inform their advertisers and tell ol' Bruce all about it....

>>> Landmark Communications owns the Weather Channel Networks headquartered in Atlanta. Included are The Weather Channel, weather.com and Weather Services International. WSI is located near Boston. Landmark's Travel network is based in London and broadcasts throughout the United Kingdom, eastern Europe and southern Africa.

NewsChannel 5 Network in Nashville and KLAS TV in Las Vegas, both CBS-TV affiliates, make up its broadcasting division.

Landmark's flagship newspaper is The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot. Other metro dailies include the Greensboro, NC, News & Record; The Roanoke (VA) Times and Landmark Community Newspapers, Inc., headquartered in Shelbyville, KY. LCNI publishes more than 100 newspapers, shoppers, college sports publications and special interest publications around the country. Its community dailies include The Carroll County (MD) Times, the Citrus County (FL) Chronicle, The News-Enterprise in Elizabethtown, KY and the Los Alamos (NM) Monitor.

Landmark also owns Landmark Education Services, Inc., with career schools in Utah, California, Nevada and Virginia. Continental Broadband Inc. provides internet access to business customers in major U.S. cities using fixed wireless technology.

It also is a partner with cable news channels Las Vegas One, Local News on Cable in Norfolk, and Pelmorex, a multimedia weather information services business based in Ontario, Canada. Pelmorex owns The Weather Network and MeteoMedia, specialty services operating in English and French.

weather.com has a huge pic of a Chevy Silverado to start with..... I'm thinking Chevrolet would like to avoid ticking off potential pickup truck buyers/gun-toters/Nascar fans. I'd bet Bruce Bradley would be just a bit disconcerted to hear that you're going to call Chevrolet. :what:

I called and as soon as I said I wanted to make a complaint they said "is this about the gun article" I said yes and I was transfered to Mr. Bradleys voicemail where I proceeded to leave an article stating I would boycott all of their advertisers for the weather channel, roanoke times, and news channel 5. Hopefully I got that all right...hopefully it helps.
