It's important to note that it's highly unlikely that any law was broken here.

Except for the part about victims of crimes not having their data released except with their written permission. My bet is more than a few people on the list fall into that category which would open up the VSP as well as this knuckehead to legal action for posting addresses without consent.

so they are increasing their bandwidth...as if they are enjoying this...hmm...so, what can we do that will make them not enjoy life as much while still remaining THR?

Keep up the pressure on their advertisers and middle managers.

Hello,

I am planning to purchase a full size van in the very near future for my family.

Chevy/GMC is now off my list.

I notice that your Chevy truck is prominently placed at www.weather.com which is owned by Landmark communications.

Landmark Communications also owns Roanoke Times where a blog/article written by Christian Trejbal discloses personal information of CCW permit holders. This is unconscionable.

As such I will not support any of the advertisers of Landmark Communications.

Just as an FYI....

I submitted comments to the RT's message board late last night regarding this jacknut's article. My comments were NEVER posted. I assume it was because my comments went something like this:

Folks,

Stop arguing with this moronic, hack-of-a-journalist. It is obvious he doesn't have 2 IQ points to rub together. You'll neither change his mind nor shame him. Instead, we need to begin helping ourselves immediately and begin damage control. I suggest 3 things:
a) Purchase a gunsafe for your home and retain the invoice for the purpose of future litigation. I'm sure the RT won't mind giving $2000 to each of the 135,000+ people whose personal information they've maliciously posted on the internet.
b) Wear you handgun even when you're home. You're now on a public target list.
c) Also, find your name on the database and print it out as a permanent record for the pending lawsuits that will surely arise in the aftermath of the RT's indiscretion. Keep the printout in your new gunsafe.

Just out of curiosity, (I don't live in VA) I searched for people who share the same last name with myself in the city of Roanoke. I now know of three people who have a ccw, and more than likely, a pistol or other firearm in that city. I also have their Addresses. It SHOULD NOT BE THAT EASY!

I hope they draw and quarter this pompous a$$

Justin

Great effort on the letter, but I highly doubt anyone outside of those who carry know what CCW means, many state troopers dont even know what CCW stands for since some states issue CHL, CHP, CWP, CWL, etc, etc. I would clarify exactly what a CCW is so they understand what it is you are upset about.

Strongly recommend all Virginians contacting James Webb and letting him know his info is out there too most likely. Webb is a CCW holder and a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment, Democrat or not.

I'm wondering if I could enlist the help of some THR members with a little extra time on their hands, please?

The database is still up and running:

I'm trying to go through as many towns in northern VA or the DC metro area looking for the names of celebs, politicians, journalists, etc. I want to find these people with permits and make sure they know their names have been published. On the search page, you can leave the last name box empty and just search an entire city; many of which have multiple mispellings. Please post any names or IM me with names you find that could be a VIP. Thanks!

Yea, same here. It crapped out.

Looks like the Roanoke Times choose to take this listing down. Way to go everyone!

The Roanoke Times Removes Database of Handgun Permit Holders
March 12, 2007 — The Roanoke Times has decided to remove the online database of registered concealed handgun permit holders from its website.

The newspaper is requesting the Virginia State Police, which provided the information, verify the data.

“When we posted the information, we had every reason to believe that the data the State Police had supplied would comply with the statutes. But people have notified us that the list includes names that should not have been released,” said Debbie Meade, president and publisher of The Roanoke Times. “Out of a sense of caution and concern for the public we have decided to take the database off of our website.”

The database was posted on roanoke.com on Sunday as part of a New River Valley editorial page column about open records. This column, as well as others that will be published this week, is part of a special focus on Sunshine Week, a national initiative to raise awareness about open government and freedom of information.

Don't be too sure. It crapped out earlier and we think it was because they were giving it and the comments section more server space. I wouldn't be shocked to see it up and running again soon.

OOPS, sorry...disregard my stupidity

Let the backpedaling begin.....

Looks like 'Sunshine Week' is getting kind of cloudy at the Roanoke Times...

I wonder if he is having one of those 'It seemed like such a good idea at the time' moments with his boss.

Titan6, it's probably more that his bosses are trying to figure out how to push the blame onto Mr. Trejbal. Mr. Bradley's voicemail states that he's out of town until Wednesday. Either he's using that as an excuse to push all the phonecalls onto the voicemail, or he's taken a little trip to see the editors.

IT's DOWN!

Good job folks, look like they have listened for now! When I contacted their HQ around 4:30 and asked to speak to the owner, the receptionist asked if this was regarding the Roanoke editorial. When I replied that it was, she sighed and stated that he was out of town, would I like his voice mail. I imagine, she must have had a lively day.

I think it's too early to declare victory as of yet, but it shows what some pissed off consituents can do!

Most of us who exercise our 2A rights understand and accept the responsibilities that accompany those rights. We also recognize that there are serious consequences to mis-using those rights.

Mr. Trejbal exercised his right to free speech. IMO, he mis-used that right and I hope that there are serious consequences coming his way from his (soon to be ex?) employer. I wish him no harm, but he should be held accountable for his actions.

That doesn't sound like there's a sense of concern for the public, only a concern for litigation regarding the victims of crime issue brought up here.
