Went to a large sporting goods store yesterday to purchase an Marlin 1895 .45-70. Picked it out, did my paperwork...The seller did ask if my background check was usually instant. It always had been in the past.

Not yesterday. I was told it had been delayed. The sales guy said that the VA state police were really busy and that was the likely cause. This true?

This is my first firearm purchase in VA. I've purchased in NC and AR with no problems. Those states call it in, and it usually takes 5 minutes.

I don't have anything on my record, and this deal bothers me. Could it be because I moved here only 6 months ago?

I have it straight from the source, as of a couple of weeks ago anyway, they have 7 positions approved to work the phones, but only 5 positions were filled. Throw in a huge holiday shopping weekend and there will be delays.

I have been delayed once or twice but that was due to system maintenance. Also you can not believe how many guns are sold during the holidays as Christmas gifts. My parents gave me several guns as Christmas gifts.

There was a gun show in Hampton this weekend, a lot of stores also had "black Friday" deals. I know a lot of people at the show were delayed.
How long was the delay?

Don't worry dude, you should be getting a call from the LGS today for your proceed.:D

Wouldn't worry about it. My checks are almost always instant, but I had one day where I was delayed for nearly 6 hours. The computer system crashed, leaving one phone line for several gun shows and every other FFL in VA...

We had a similar thing this past weekend at a gun show hosted by my gun club. I bought a revolver but had to wait until the next day before the background check could be done because the two (count 'em, two) OSP personnel that answer the phone were off duty for the day. We had hundreds of background checks held up. The LGS was having the same problem. It's so damn frustrating, there was a bill in the state house to eliminate the OSP link and have FFls call NCIC directly. It would have saved the broke state government 3 million per year and allowed people with a carry permit to skip the background check. The bill passed the House with a wide bipartisan margin but one damndable Democrat in the State Senate bottled up the bill, in fact all the gun bills that were passed by the house until the session was over and the bill dead. Seems the SEIU or one of the other public unions didn't want the bill passed because two bureaucrats jobs would have been eliminated. No big deal costing the state three million or inconveniencing hundreds of state citizens, gotta bow to those stinking unions.
