VA to FL CCW in car

Thanks for the quick reply Winchester 73, thats what I thought but why wouldn't you say, if stopped, that you are traveling to a state(final destination)
that allows you to exercise your 2nd Amendment rights(self) protection. When
I got my FL ccw, I was asked why use for their permit and I said self defense,
so isn't that a lawful purpose at my destination? Coming back to NJ from FL, I
could use "going to the range", but depends at the time of day. The same
situation holds true if I was going to Vermont, NH or Maine via NYS. Another
problem, suppose I want to go the FL, Alaska, etc via air. If I check in my
handgun at the airport, I would be subject to arrest, wouldn't I? It seems that
the anti-gun law makers in NJ really have this issue leveraged in their favor. I realize that any comments on this or any forum doesn't imply the letter of the
law but gives us opinions that we might be able to clarify with the proper legal
folks.

Well,NJ law does not include going to another state in their carry reg destinations as far as I can see.And they don't seem to believe in the 2nd Amendment in Trenton either!
As far as the airport(I assume you mean Newark)that was discussed at length last week in another thread on THR.Some posters stated they had no problems flying out of Newark with firearms.I'll try to find that thread for you and link it.

I did some phone calling this morning and visited the NJ State Police. I also called State Police Hdqs firearms in Trenton and all seemed to say, just make sure your handgun in locked in case in trunk etc. and ammo locked in case in trunk and it would not be a problem to travel out of NJ. I also spoke with someone at the Port Authority Police for NWK airport and was told as long as
I conform to the proper regs of the individual airline, ie. handgun in locked hardcase within a locked piece of luggage that I would be ok. In any event I was told I would not be arrested. All sounds good, but would say if any other
NJ folks on the forum, they should also check it out and see if they get the
same story.

Thousands of illegal guns in criminal hands Newark alone, but they are worried about you transporting yours through their state in a locked box.

That sounds fine.Hopefully that is the case and other NJ citizens(?)will check it out to verify the info.
Good luck and have a safe trip wherever you go.

Actually, a case--albeit a tricky one--could be made for the idea that FOPA protects carrying it out of NJ. FOPA says that it's legal so long as it's legal to possess in the endpoint states. It is legal to have it in NJ, as in FL, and you are en route, so it seems to hold that FOPA would actually protect you in NJ.

I'm not advising this, mind you, as even if you win, it'd be expensive, but it's just a thought.
