Just took a vaction in the northern part of Wisconsin. The main part was to scope out some property that has been in the family since the 1946. It totals 80 Acres. Other being selective cut logged 30 years ago, nothing has been done with it. Took the family and we started checking out and figuring the borders on the property (with the help of locals and maps). During our serveral days on the property we found elevation changes of more than 1,000 feet, a creek, Pond, nature spring, swamp area, ravine several different pockets of trees and the like. We also found turkey, beaver, otter, deer, grouse, rabbit, squirel, fox, coyote, and bear signs. The bear signs were 3 dens and fresh scatt. Did not think too much of the bear signs, however, my neighbor showed me a picture that was taken at his cabin, on fathers day this year, (next to the property) of a black bear that was higher than the fender of the mini pickup behind it. He ventured that it was 400+ pouinds. After seeing that picture, I was sure glad to be carring my Smith and Wesson 686 loaded with .357.... I just wish there was some way to reduce the state bird population.... Mosquitoes....

Has any one hunted bear with a hand gun?

In this area they only give out 29 bear harvest permits a year and it is done by lottery... Started wondering if I shot a bear on our property that was a threat to life and limb and did not have a harvest permit, what would I do....

Some of the local's say to SSS... Shoot, Shovel, and Shutup..... or Shout, Shoot and Shovel.... Anybody been in that situation?

just make sure that if you shoot a bear that it truly was in self defense
black bears are not very likely to attack unless cornered or surprised

Sounds like a great piece of property. When it comes to life and limb of myself or a family member better to be safe than sorry. Leave no doubt for you or any authorities that might find out!
