Vacation weapons.

I carry my main CCW, an XD 45 compact with 3 10 and 3 13 round mags, and my hiking gun, a Taurus Tracker .44 mag with 2 1/2" barrell. I would like to take a long gun, either my AK or 870, but don't want to have to deal with a situation in which my wife drives the vehicle without me.

Just came back from a vacation yesterday. Rented a cabin in the Smokey Mountains. I took my KelTec P32 in a pocket holster for everything, and leather fanny pack (yes, I'm a tourist:eek:) contained my Glock 26 with a mag of Hydra-Shoks, and a backup mag of ball. I just got the pack a couple months ago; it has a built-in holster and mag holder that are accessed by pulling the zipper and the face kinda falls exposing the goodies. No speed rig for sure, but faster getting into action than many, such as belly-bands.;) And it has the room for your wallet or whatever.

Is it really necessary to take more than your normal carry item on vacation, plus maybe an extra loaded mag or two? I don't foresee a full-out land-based invasion of the US happening while I'm on domestic vacation, so I shouldn't need more than a mag (or two at MOST) in the slim chance that I EVER have to use my carry gun as a civilian.

You're going on vacation, not deploying to Fallujah....on the slim chance you do ever use your weapon on vacation, it'll be in self-defense at close range....not neutralizing hostiles at 200 yds.
If you're going camping or hiking, or maybe to a cabin in a remote location, I can understand the extra weapon or two...but going on a normal vacation (tourist city, amusement park, beach town, etc. etc.), there shouldn't be any need for extra items...

Just my .02, though. YMMV.

Same as I take with me whenever I travel away from home:
- G23 with 4 extra 15 round mags
- Extra box of .40 ammo
- P3AT with an extra mag
- extra box of .380 ammo
- K-bar
- Schrade Old timer lockback, or CRKT M21
- Occassionally I will take a Rem 870 or Marlin 1894 .44 along for the ride

Over decades of travel I have never had to use any of these for defense. And if I did need them the probability would be the presence alone, without shooting, would be enough to deter an attack. And if I did need to shoot, most likely I would only need 1-3 shots.

But...I like to prepare for the worse just in case. I don't know which trip, if any, will ever turn out to be the one caught up in a disaster so I take plenty with me any time. What if the next trip is when the next earthquake/flood/civil riot/hurricane strikes? I want to have plenty of options with me. I imagine the tourists caught up in Katrina or the LA riots didn;t expect to need weapons on their trip either.

Better to have and not need...

Gee whiz guys, what are you expecting? I am in the camp of carry what you normally carry. I thought the whole point of conceal carry was to protect yourself. I try to avoid risky situations in my home town, I surely don't change that basic behavior while on vacations. I don't own a good pocket gun like a snubbie or one of the better subcompact semi-autos. But my basic Ruger p95 is ok around town, in the car, or on vacation. And I feel ok with one mag. Its very reliable, accurate, and fairly light, although a little bulky. I have always had a small knife of one type or another in my pocket since I was about 10 or 11 yrs old. I carry a small pepper spray usually on daily walks and such, mostly because some of the neighbors have dogs that freak me sometimes. K.I.S.S. Keep it simple
BUT, if I am going somewhere I know my vacation will include recreational shooting sports, obviously I bring what appropriate guns will be needed for the sport.
Just out of curiosity, not casting judgements about our rights, do you wonder what the LEOs, media, justice would say if you were involved in a self defense situation.
I know, better judged by 12 than caried by 6. But, If antis heard on the news, which just loves us, that this so called tourist stopped a carjacker by shooting him. However the tourist had three or four guns with him and six "high capacity clips that were banned by the Clinton adminstration with over a hundred rounds of firepower". Well we may be in the right, but I wouldn't want that extra burden over my head.

benEzra, I'm headed to Ocean Isle in June. (Nice to see a fellow North Carolinian.)

If you're down East, can you recommend any good places to shoot?

Mmm.. fellow North Carolinians... too bad you guys are South and/or East.

Up near Greensboro, NC, over here. Would've been fun to shoot a bit though, eh?

When ever I've gone on vacation, I've had a Glock (17 or 19) and a couple spare magazines.
One time I did carry my MK9 (Kahr) too, but that was to Boston. The Glock was locked up in the vehicle on that trip. The Kahr was easier to conceal.

Interesting food for thought guys; thanks for the advice.

I've, historically, planned my carry weapon, and ammunition quantity, based on the on the "Get Home" school; as opposed to the school of thought that advocates "3seconds3yards3shots."

In my mind, having "enough" to get home is paramount; and, having enough to get home differs, vastly, as distance, and the lack of knowledge of easy resupply, increases. For me, it's more a tactical question.

Still, many of you have indicated that the Uzi is probably not necessary; and some have mentioned that this is not Iraq. Very true; and you may be right. Although, having been to Rhodesia, when there was such a place, and Israel, preparedness wins only because I'm worried about this country, and what we, via our politicians, have allowed it to become. Franky, porous.

So, I'm going to upgrade preparedness this year, and probably well into the foreseeable future.

This is an issue every time I travel with my family. I live in Illinois and most of the trips are to family in Wisconsin. Yep, two of the most unfriendly 2-A states there are.:cuss: I feel the need to protect the family, but my wife would be a little freaked out and my Mother is somewhat of an Anti. If I would pack, it would have to be on the sly. I have a Colt snubby that would work, but the Mrs. doesn't know about that one! One of my 1911's would be harder to hide too. So, I opt for the legal route and carry a good social size fixed blade IWB at all times.

I load up the armored humvee with enough fire power to make MS-13 jealous and enough ammo to keep a African war lord supplied for three years. You can never be to careful. It's a crazy world we live in after all.

Vacation-dont go to the places that do not welcome us. I have a standing invite to go to Canada w/ friends but refuse cause of the rules. They dont need my money.

1. What kind of weapons do you take on vacation?
I normally take my carry gun -- a Kimber Classic. If I intend to do some shooting, I will take the weapons I intend to use. For example, when elk hunting, I will take Bigfoot Wallace (my custom '03 Springfield in .35 Brown-Whelen) and Fionn MacCumahail (my pre-64 Model 70 in .30-06) as a backup. I will also usually bring along a .22 pistol.
2. How much ammunition do you take?
For my carry gun, a spare mag or two and a box of handloads (100 rounds) for practice and plinking.

For the other weapons, enough for anticipated shooting -- for centerfire rifles, usually a 50 round box. For the .22 a Wal-Mart bulk pack.
I usually drag along my daily carry items, a SOG Flash 2, a small can of FOX pepper spray, and a Glock 19 with three or four mags (an increase of 2-3 mags for vacation.)

But, because the world is changing, I was also thinking about taking the Uzi along this year, neatly disguised in a Wilson tennis racket case.

Is the Uzi overkill? (no pun intended) Or, should I maybe just take along a few more mags for the Glock?

What do you do?

And what's your opinion of my vacation load out? Less, more? Take the AR instead?
I really see no need for pistol caliber carbines -- unless you just like to shoot them. I'd add a cell phone and a GPS unit to the gear list, a source of fire and a good knife.

I generally carry my ccw- a snubby and a reload. I'm kind of a minimalist when it comes to packing and travelling.

Typically my 9mm Ruger P89 with 2 10 rnd magazines full of 115gr Speer GDHP's. I also keep an additional 20 rounds in a box in my center compartment. Plus my 3 year old black lab goes on every vacation I go on.

I usually go shooting on vacation.

Like now, I have:
(2) Ak74's
(1) AK47
(3) .22's
(2) 9mm's
(2) 45's
(1) .357

and somewhere around 12,000 rounds of ammo:D

Least, the 357 and .45 I always carry, and my AK47 in a tennis racket case.

Vacation? What's that? Anytime we go out of town, this gets dropped in the van,

SKS3.gif

Along with our sidearms, we're good. The SKS, in a case, with the chest pouch takes up very little room in the van, is actually quite easily hidden from plain view, (legally, thank you), and is a good cheap, reliable, accurate semi-auto rifle.
Do we need it? Probably not, no more than I hope I wouldn't need the vanBOBelt in the back, loaded with survival supplies, including tent, food, sleeping bags, etc. I probably won't need the jack or spare tire either, but I keep them in the vehicle, too.

Gee whiz guys, what are you expecting?
Essentially the same thing that we expect & prep for every day ... except that we're not a half-hour from the armory at home.

A vacationer pretty obviously has a high density of very portable valuables, coupled with more dependents to worry about.

I also don't tend to encounter bears in my daily routine ... but two vacations back it was a daily occurrence for a week. (And before you say "bears aren't dangerous", this was in an area marked "dangerous bears".)

Intended by the author as satire, but unintentionally gets it right:
Don't Forget The Guns (a.k.a The Nelson's Ride Along)
Words And Music By
Cheryl Wheeler

Now let's get the kids and pack up the car
Take that vacation we've been waiting for
Drive across this country leave our worries far behind
Singin' four-part harmony to "sweet adeline"

`Cause I got these books and maps from triple "A"
We'll visit friends and sites along the way
So bring the bikes and toys and diapers
Pay the neighbor's son
And call to stop the mail and, honey,
Don't forget the guns

(Chorus)
Now don't forget the guns you know exactly what I mean
Bring the pistols, bring the uzi and the old AR-15
We don't look for trouble but by golly if we're in it
It's nice to know we're free to blow nine hundred rounds a minute

We'll head for Chicago, stop for the night
Hope for good weather hope the kids don't fight
They've never seen mt. Rushmore and they ought to understand
The kind of men who forged our freedom all across this land

We'll hike up a trail and ride down a street
Stand by Old Faithful and watch her blow off steam
When we pack picnic lunches that's not all we'll bring along
`Cause we'll be packing 45's case anything goes wrong

(Repeat Chorus)

Oh riding along we'll follow the sights
Over the mountains under the pines
Up to boot hill where they got what they gave
In the land of the free you've got to be brave

(Repeat Chorus)

seriosly, what are you expecting? 6 extra mags for a pistol is insane! more than one gun is even more insne. My dad's daily carry is a .45 under his seat, with the magazine only half full so it wont wear out the spring so quick. theres a box of bullets at home, but other than that, it's just those 5 rounds in the gun and thats it. if you'r up against enough enemys to need more than maybe 1-2 extra mags TOPS, you'll be shot before you empty the first one.

I guess if you can then do so. Take what ever makes you feel comfy.

Last time I went on vacation was a few years ago. I just took a Rossi .38 and
5 extra rounds.

Now I guess it would be the HK and 2 extra clips. If I was doing the long haul
thing a spare is not a bad idea.

MONGO--you CAN bring a gun...

And Mongo, just what keeps you from bringing a weapon lawfully unloaded and cased along for the ride to Wisconsin?

We travel armed to every place we visit on vacation. It may be stowed away where a CCW is disallowed, but no law prohibits a citizen from traveling in a car with a pistol.

My 1911a1 is there in my bag with my Teddy Bear 'cause I get nervous staying in strange hotels with my wife and kids.

And while we are on vacation the world might change. If some trooper is unhappy about my cased and unloaded weapon in my trunk he can just lump it. His unhappiness is not my problem--I'm visiting his state to spend money. I never get pulled over to begin with or ever questioned by any LEO's because -- guess what -- I'm not doing anything wrong.

Point being, take some piece of mind along to cheese country--they are an OPEN CARRY STATE AFTER ALL!!! (just don't carry south of far north).;)

And on the side, my wife is an NRA Lifer and she STILL hands me the 'you're bringing that thing line' (it's like a ritual when packing). I remind here that I also have a spare tire and jack in the car--should I take them out? Tool is tool.

And what vast mountain of experience do you base this statement on?

comon sense. a glock with 6 regular mags, thats a total of 119 rounds. If you only have 10-round mags, that's still 70 rounds. if you are going to be attacked by a group of people large enough to warrant that much lead, at least some, probobly most will have guns. do you think theyre just gonna stand there waiting to be shot? they are either gonna shoot back or haul ass. Many people with guns will probobly kill one person with a gun. and shooting people in the back as they flee won't look very good in court now would it?
