I'm thinking about trading in my S&W 686+ 6" but I don't know how much credit I should look for. I've only put 135 rounds through it and its in like-new condition. Nothing wrong with it at all. I just don't want to go to the shop and get gouged. Thanks

On a private sale, I'd look in the $350-$450 range in my area (Louisiana, where guns are not all that expensive - other areas can be much higher, I know). On a dealer trade-in, I'd look for $50-$100 less than that.

I don't even know if you'll get that much when you trade it in. Dealers tend to not give much at all, in my experience, when you're trying to sell used guns. They know that it's a pain to find someone to purchase a used firearm and then there is always the paperwork and such... so they try to get you big-time.
Where are you located? That could also make a big difference. Also, why are you selling, if you don't mind me asking... I've got that exact model and think it just might be my favorite handgun. Especially since I machined the cylinder to accept moonclips.

I'd be skeptical of most dealer's; cuz they tend to
want to give little (or nothing) for your trade-in; but then
they will price your gun at about 75% of the cost of the
same weapon NIB. Case in point, I agree that a private
party sell will bring in more cash; than selling to a dealer!
Example: In my area of the ghetto, S&W 4" and 6" model
686's are kind'a plentiful; so I would assume you could
expect to get no more than $375.00 at topps! Most of
the buyers I know would really want to pick it up at
around the $325.00-350.00 mark.
I have got a S&W 6" 686-5 of my own; but it ain't about
to go nowhere.

Dealers have to give you about 35% less than the gun is worth because that's how much they are going to mark it up for resale. As to value of a pristine 686+? In kali they run $575 - $600 new, so a choice used one can easily fetch $450 - $500. You will get more money if you find a dealer who will let you sell it on consignment for a flat fee when it sells. At least then, you know how much the "gouge amount" is up front.
I wanted to trade it in because I'm just not a revolver guy. I never really felt like shooting it so it sat in the safe. It was a good gun. Heck I was pretty accurate with it, but in the end I wanted something I would shoot more so I traded it in for a USP. I got 360 for it which was a considerable loss but its what I expected.

A dealer is not going to give you more for a used gun than it costs him wholesale for the same gun new.
If you bought a gun for $400, the dealers not going to give you $300, when he can by the same gun new for $250.
