Value of a Colt HBAR with Colt Scope

I just saw and add in a local trader type paper for a post ban Colt AR-15 with a Colt made scope. The add is not specific beyond that. I have wanted an AR for quite some time now and this one sounds like a pretty fair deal. I figure even a post ban Colt with a Colt scope on it is worth a closer look.

I actually have a couple questions;

1.) I am a little new to "collecting" and as such need a couple pointers on what
to look for. Basic overall condition from the outside should be something I
can figure out, but is there anything specific to the AR world that I should
be looking for (or looking to avoid)?
2.) Assuming it is at least in pretty good shape, what is something like this
worth? He's asking $700 for it. I've been considering building one...but if
one can be had for a decent deal...

Of course I got his answering machine when I called. It'll probably be gone when I finally get through to him, but I'll keep trying.

Your best bet would be to go over to www.gunbroker.com and do a search for "Colt AR15." Use the Advanced Search option, and select auctions that have ended in the last 90 days. This will give you a good idea of what the rifles are selling for.

There are a lot of different post-ban Colt AR's, so make sure you're comparing apples to apples.

If it's all Colt (upper, lower, barrel, bolt & carrier) $700 is a pretty good price. They generally run $750 -$850 without any scope.

Real Colt scopes (3X & 4X) are semi collectable and go for $150 - $250

Most likely it's a pre-ban gun if it has a fixed carry handle and the Colt scope was original with the gun.
