I bought this 30-06 semi auto Remington model 742 Woodsmaster SN# 692**** used back in the 70s for my wife to use on big game. She carried it very little and has only shot it maybe 50 times. She is now over 60 and loves to shoot semi auto handguns. We are going to take it to a gun show/swap meet tomorrow. I would say wood, checkering, blueing is 98%, almost pristine condition. Can anyone give me an idea of its value?
Thank you for your help.

I might add the scope is a 3-9 UNIVERSAL from Haleah, Florida with WEAVER rings. More pics:

If this thread is not in the right category, I appologise to the managers and give my ok to move.

I almost bought one unscoped in good condition at a pawn shop recently for $250, I passed on it after reading about the cycling problems.

I would go a little higher due to condition and round count. True the 742's won't go the long run, but for hunting with regular maintaince they will last quite a long time.

my dad had a 742 in 30-06, and with the fine threads on the bolt, shooting heavy loads through it messed them up, so that it wouldn't cycle correctly.. he had it fixed then traded it in on a Remington 700.. (great gun btw)

with that being said, of all the rifles I own, none are semi-auto's (as far as high powered rifles go)

Wholesale would be $250-$350. Private f t f maybe $350-$400.

Agreed, although I would say a tad lower- wholesale $250-325 and FTF $325-$375. That being said, we're in two different parts of the country.

I recently sold my synthetic 7400 carbine in .30-06 with no scope (but with Leupold bases and rings) for $375.

Wow, that is definitely the nicest 742 I have ever laid eyes on, by far. The only thing that would make it nicer, IMHO, is a Weaver tip off base/rings combo. I have a 740 in 30.06 and it's a nice shooter, but much used. The 742 is a better gun than the 740, less issues.
You might be able to get into the $400s at a gun show.....some older gentleman who sold his 742 years ago and now regrets it, might get nostalgic.

Around here it would be a hard sell, due to their well deserved reputation for failure (google "jamomatic"). In my opinion they are all a ticking timebomb, and will fail if used. Contrary to what some will say that routine maintenance will prevent it, two gunsmiths have told me it will not. I called the factory about one of mine, and they told me in so many words they would not work on them and that failure was a certainty with time due to design flaw. My .30-06 failed first, even after I used a chamber brush routinely. Next my .243 failed with the same bolt/chamber problem. Your gun looks near new and probably has a couple hundred rounds of life, but there is a reason that Remington went to a different bolt system with the 7400 and 7500.

They are a good HUNTING rifle, and with only a few boxes of ammo through them each year, they will out live most hunters.

Start trying to use is for an assult rifle, and you won't be very happy with it!
