Alright guys. It's that time of year so lets see your varmint rig with a victim or two. I just shot this one yesterday. It's the first one with this rig that I got from MikePaiN. It's a Savage/Stevens in 223 Rem. Thanks again Mike. DSCF0624.jpg

I don't have any pics of victims, but my varmint rifle is a Savage 12FV, recently rebarrelled with a LW 28", 8 twist stainless barrel in .243 Winchester, here it's wearing a 6.5-20 Weaver Grand Slam but I recently changed that out to a Weaver Classic Extreme 8-32, and with a Sharpshooter Supply LVT stock.

You guys are doing better then me, I finally saw my first ground hog in Ohio Thursday. I'm in the northern part of the state, it doesn't warm up here till end of May.

But I have 2 varmint rigs, both Rem 700's. One an old VS in .25-06 with Krieger barrel and the second, an SPS VS stainless in .22-250.

What is that white stuff all around the first rifle? Looks like sand imported from Panama City beach. :)

Of course I won't be smiling in August around here.

Tacdad,

Just curious, did you buy that rifle off of Savage Shooter.com? It looks like one that was for sale there a while back. I am taking my Steven 200 .223 out tomorrow for some coyote hunting. Hopefully I will have a picture to post.

rem 700,s in .223 and 308 are what i use a lot for varmits. eastbank.

ECVmatt,
No, I actually bought it off of here. The seller may have posted it on savage shooters as well but I'm not sure

R700 VS 22-250, Leupold Varix-III 6.5-20x50
Only had it for a short critter season, but bagged 2 doe, 1 Coyote, 1 woodchuck last summer.

Just brought some of that PCB sand home with me Sunday! Today I sat through my Sons Lacrosse game in the snow, sleet, rain, wind, 35 degree Michigan day:(

Varmit Rig

Here are some pics of our varmit rig. Just the rig not our rifles. Al

I have a burn pile that coyotes visit at night that is 550 yards from the roof of a barn. I have a red motion light but the coyotes have not been cooperative this year ... yet! Calling hasn't worked either.

The rifle is a Essential Arms lower with a Model 1 upper in 6mm PPC with a 24" Stainless Steel Extra Heavy Shilen Bull Barrel. It has a REX 6-24X50 Illuminated mil dot scope and Harris Bi-pod.

Remington 7.62 x 39 brass with Sierra 85 grain HPBT Gameking @ 2776 fps.

Only a half dozen victims so far with this rig. I only have a pic of one of them.
It's a little small, but more of a challenge!:D

Old Dog Man when I grow up I want a set up like yours. I bet you don't even have to fight off mosquitoes! Looks like you have it made in the shade.

The top one is a 218Bee with a Haverkamp action and a twenty-seven inch Shilen barrel.
The bottom one is a 300Win.Mag .A Bat action,it has a Shilen thirty x one and a half inch barrel. An old Leopold twenty four power scope. The stock is eleven pound fiber glass.I`m waiting on a barrel for my mod.70Win.243.The barrel that come on it flip-flops 90 and 95 grain Sierra bullets..With a 10 twist.

Got tired of being sun burned and having PD poop blown all over me. We had 2 trailers like this but lost some of our shooters, now only one left. LOL. Al

Since we seem a bit light on the critter part, my Ruger 77 .223 was responsible for these.
I bought that rifle in Feb 94 & it's still my favorite g-hog buster.

Matrem- looks good. Ground hog hunting is my favorite kind of hunting all year long. Looks like you had a good time that day. I just missed one by about 3 inches at just over 500 yards in 20-30 mph wind. I was aiming about 8 feet to the right kentucky windage style. It was a blast!

dubbleA- looks like they grow some kind of mutant ground hog where you are.

Certaindeaf- it's the new PA state record for javelina! You'll see me in the record books soon. Lol

and a few victims.....once I get my elevation figured out.
Damon555 - That was Awesome! Our groundhogs don't "pop" like that unless your using some heavy artillery. I would love to take a trip out west to shoot some prairie dogs.

not sure I know how to attach a photo, but here goes. This is my Ruger #1 .204, shooting 32 gr Sierra at about 4,000 fps

Damon555 - It's a great time.....I think we're going twice this year.
What state do you go to? Do you have private ground out there or do you just go to public land? I'd love to set up something with some friends and go for a week. What's the best way to go about it?

Well, I'd love to tell you where we go but getting the word out about good spots is kinda rough on our shooting. We've spent years scouting and talking to land owners to find spots that are good year after year.

If I had to do it all over again I'd head to some public land that is purported to have a good prairie dog population. I'd scout around and see if I can get any shooting in. If that didn't work I'd start visiting the local farm stores or cafes as do a little asking. Most people who have prairie dog problems will be happy to tell you where to go. The first year might be kind of slow but it gets better year after year as you figure out where the towns are.

Prairie dogs can be found in many states out west. All I can say is do your homework and you'll get some decent shooting in. Another option is to hire a guide one year, get the feel for the area then start making trips without a guide.....
