I just returned from the range. I was going to sight in the Veber 6-24 scope I've had some problems with earlier and which I had replaced under warranty. I checked the adjustments by attaching the scope to a vise and turned screws both ways and back all the way. I also checked the effect of magnification adjustment, which was the reason for warranty claim. The POI of the returned scope wandered over 10" depending on magnification.
So, the scope went on a .308 Saiga, I boresighted it and headed to the range. First shots. 8" "group" at 110 yards. Hmm. The rifle is good for at least 2" @ 150, often better.
Adjustments, 5 more shots. They were pretty much centered on target, but the group had grown to 10". Something's wrong. I removed the scope and shot 5 with irons: 2.5", dead on. The scope went back on and I tried again. Five shots, 11". WTH?
Boresighting. One shot. Boresighting. Another shot. Recoil had moved the POI all over the place, and while some AK:s can be hard on scopes, I haven't broken one with the Saiga. Even cheap Bushnell models have held up just fine.
I just removed the Veber from the mount and rings. It might be ok for mashing potatoes, but it sure as heck isn't something I'm going to use as a rifle sight. Apparently you get what you pay for, now I appreciate the Zeiss scopes on my other rifles even more than before.
