Red-headed stepchild----SKS-M
While we're debateing all the different typs of AKs, consider something else, unless you're dead set on getting an AK.
I have an SKS-M, which is roughly as compact as an AK (16". "paratrooper" short barrel) and takes AK mags. It is more accurate that every AK I've ever shot/seen (but its not a tack-driver, by any means). And you've got a fairly "rare" gun, unlike all the AK clones out there.
I bought mine several years ago at a gun show, and haven't seen one locally since then. But, a quick check on some of the auction sites shows some NIB ones for about $400.
I've put over 5000 rounds through mine, with exacly one failure (stovepipe), using just about avery type of AK mag you can buy. Utterly reliable.
The only downside is that they are significantly heavier than an AK (but maybe this is why they're a bit more accurate.)
