Vented Rib Question...

What is the purpose of a vented rib I'm looking at getting a shotgun barrel for my Handi and will probably be using it for birds and rabbits.. There is the vented ribbed 12 and 20 with screw in chokee or the modded choke 20 and 28... Just wondering if the vented rib serves a purpose...

Two purposes on sporting shotguns: Allows for a flat surface when sighting your target. Many shooters consider this superior to a round barrel surface. Most noticable when shooting birds (clay or otherwise)

Second purpose: Cosmetic. Looks nice.

Original purpose - on military guns, keeps the hot barrel away from your hand. "Ventilated" for extra cooling.

I think the original justification was reduction of "mirage" from heating.

Personally, I just like the way they look.

That's what I learned. Barrels will get pretty hot after not too many shots. You look over them, and everything gets blurry. The vent ribs raise the sight plane off the barrel and allow for faster cooling.

5. Gives you a place to add a middle bead so you can aim your shotgun like a rifle.

6. Gives you a place to mount a big fiber optic front sight so the ducks can really see you.

8. Allows for custom look when johboat, Bronco, or trap door smushes it.

9 Impedes rag wiping off barrel, especially folks that actually use beads on a shotgun, no matter how many.

10. Premount shooters got something to see if they cant the gun.


I'll be sitting over here with a plain, fixed choked barrel with no beads if'n ya need me.

OK... So How often do you have to shot in a row to have the heat waves off the barrel to impede your vision?

Vent ribs were invented for, and first used by trap & skeet shooters.

They shoot rounds of 25 shells in a short amount of time.
On a hot day, heat waves off the hot barrel was felt to cause sighting errors.

It is a non-issue on a hunting gun.

Still listed as reason #114 why one misses a quail that explodes at feet.

"If I'd had a vent rib the mirage of that explosion would not have impeded my ability to actually get the gun up and shoot the sucker, and maybe not peed myself either".

When I shoot trap my gun definately develops a mirage, the rib does help supress this. I also like it for aiming but it's just what I'm used to.

And it helps keep us working. We also can do a matted rib for rcmodel.
The vent. high ribs we do are Olympic ribs, 1 and 1/2 inch high for stright neck shooting and high combs on stocks.
There are tapered ribs that we do that kind of dissapear when you look down them.
And we do solid ribs also.
