I'm thinking about finding a self-loading rifle in 30-06, which is not M1 Garand. Or BAR (either military or hunting). I looked at Luxembourg's FN-49 (SAFN), which seems a bit ugly when compared with 8mm. Most are pretty beaten up, too. The Noreen BN36 is enticing, but it goes for something like $3,000 or so?

Here's an interesting alternative:

Okay, yes, FN-49 is prettier. But this is a new-production gun for less than $1,000.

But I'm curious, is the length of its receiver actually sufficient for reliable function? Does anyone here have a Vepr in 30-06 and can share the experience?

If you can find a Remington 740-7400 that has been shot very little they are a great rifle. I love my 740. However they are not a high volume, high round count rifle. They are a great hunting rifle.

They make Veprs in 54R which is basically the same cartridge/action length. Not sure about mags...

What's wrong with the Garand BTW?

I like the VEPR. Have only shot one in 308. I'm sure if they offer it in 30-06, they have a standard length receiver. More robust than the 742/40/400.

I found both cartridges in my vast arsenal and 30-06 is significantly longer than Pattern 1903 Cartridge, a.k.a. 7.62x54R. I am aware that Bannerman conversions fed 30-06 out of Mosin-Nagant magazines with no issue, but that's only because Nagant's magazine has a hinge in front that makes it excessively long.
