Verdigris On New 7.62x54R PPU Ammo

Just for curiosity sake, I'll have to knock a few bullets out of some of my 7.62mm Prvi ammos I have in deep storage upstairs. When I first bought my M1a, I picked up 1500 rounds of white box PPU, most 01-07 (first run, from 2007,) and some later stuff. It has been stored in a 50 cal ammo can since I've gotten it. Much of my 7.62mm brass stock is brass from this ammo, I've had no problems with the brass... unlike the once fired, processed LC and WIN military brass I bought at the same time (that is a tale for another thread, however.) If you are interested, I'll post my results.

Of course we are interested, please post results! Thanks.

OK... long post time...

Here's what I have... If memory serves, I bought 3 separate lots of Prvi .308 white box ammos before 2010. This ammo is headstamped NNY, not PPU, like their commercial ammo, this is designed to be a NATO equivalent (without being NATO.) Two of the lots were from 2007, I would have to dig through The Archives to see when I bought the other lot. I've shot up almost all of the first lot, or I have it loaded in strippers and bandoliers, and it is my primary source for reloadable .308 brass for my lever-action and my M1a. All this ammo has red primer sealant. What I found was some had neck tar, some not so much. I also found the later stuff (the pile of 20 rounds) had ball powder, the single round I found, likely from the first lot, had extruded powder, and more tar on the neck. It's obvious they made a load change sometime after the first few lots. No signs of corrosion anywhere inside, outside, powder, box... which is good.

Still shiny and new looking, 13 years in storage.

First 2 cartridges from the box... clean ball powder, no neck tar (or very little,) nice clean innards...

Next 2 cartridges were pulled from 2 different bandoliers I have loaded with it. One of those is not the same... it has neck tar and extruded powder, likely from the first lot I bought, a very early PPU lot. Still... flowing powder, clean brass... the case with the shell holder on it is the the case from the newer lot (ball powder.) Note the other case is darker at the base... I'm guessing from the graphite of the extruded powder. These 2 cartridges were not in ammo cans, so they have seen a different environment than the stuff above.

...and the two lots of powder... ball on the right, mix of ball and extruded powder on the left.
