OK, Garand Gurus- I am getting about four rounds in a 2" group, with the rest strung vertically above. The rear handguard is tight between the reciever and the front band. The front handguard floats free. The stock presses lightly down on the front band. That pressure could vary depending on the sling tension.
Ideas? I have heard the rear handguard being tight can cause this? If I can get rid of the vertical string this gun will shoot into about 2".

Open that gap between the rear handguaed and receiver. Might help out, but cannot be sure. I did read that this can cause problems.

OK- I took off the rear handguard and it was VERY VERY tight, wedged between the receiver and the front band. I had to pry it off, a little at a time on each side. I will try it now and report back.
Also, thinking about it, I suspect the fit gets looser as the barrel heats up, not tighter. Steel expands more than wood with heat, so the barrel would get longer and there would be less compression on the wood, yes?
So I get a nice four shot cold group, then the pressure on the guard/band relaxes, and the shot string starts climbing. (theory)

The handguard may be causing some of this so it does need to be delt with.
Vertical stringing in my experience is more a bedding problem than anything else. You might look at that also.

It is amazing what wonders bedding compound can do for an M1.
