Vintage S&W 22 LR

Great thread and photos. Reminds me of the fantastic .32 S&W revolver thread several years back. THR gold!

Edit: This was the .32 thread. One of my all-time favorites-

Being the age I am (NOT in any way young), today's prices appear outrageous. But then one must consider that the dollar that has lost its buying power.

Another factor in classic revolver pricing is that the quality of workmanship on these elder .22 revolvers. Today's workmanship just isn't there -- no pinned barrels, no recessed chambers. To reduce costs, manufacturing companies have sacrificed a lot -- to me, too much has been lost.

I look at the photos in this thread and am utterly taken aback. The workers in decades past deeply cared about their product and their customers. It was a matter of personal pride and man-oh-man does it ever show!

I send out a giant THANK YOU! to all of you who've sent-in these priceless / wondrous photographs.

The little Model 63 shoots well. These are double action. It’s pretty stiff on initial pull, but once the cylinder is turned, it’s easier and very smooth.

Mine helped me learn to shoot double action. We had a Little Metal Man the same size as this B29 target; shot it with the kit gun until it developed a permanent bend in the middle.
Oddly, my 63 dash nothing doesn't have a pinned barrel.

Can anyone provide some info on a model 43? I can't find much on the older models except the original came with the flat latch and the later came with the standard 60s-70s latch. I think its a J frame with 3 1/2 barrel.

What info are you looking for? It's an aluminum J-frame .22LR (including an aluminum cylinder) and is a very nice piece. They're worth a decent price in nice condition and I was very fortunate to find one in near-mint condition just a month ago.

I think you gave me the piece of information I was looking for. I wondered what made it different from other models. I'm assuming the cylinder chambers are lined?

I took the Model 17 to my Friday morning trip to the range and gave it a try. It shot a little bit high and left, but a couple adjustments got it on target. I have been shooting mostly 22 LR the last four weeks and I used my EDC at the end of today's session and holy cow was it a lot different shooting a 3" 9MM with self defense loads compared to a 6" 22 LR. I need to shoot that gun more often than I have been lately.

No, 22LR is just not a high pressure round that puts a lot of stress on cylinders. While your concern seems valid, from everything I have read it really is nothing to worry about in this gun.
