I can remember when an 'assault rifle' had to be select fire, and an 'assault weapon' was one with just a certain number of evil features.

Wisconsin Hunter Murders Show Need For Effective Assault Weapons Ban—Armed Hunters No Match For SKS Assault Rifle
President Has Power to Fully Ban Import of All Foreign-Made Assault Rifles Such as SKSs And AK-47s

Washington, DC—SKS assault rifles like the one reported to have been used to murder five hunters and wound three others in Wisconsin over the weekend are a primary threat to police, the Violence Policy Center (VPC) reported today. So far in 2004, at least six law enforcement officers have been slain by SKSs. In the wake of the shooting, the VPC called on President George W. Bush today to use the Administration's executive authority over firearm imports to fully ban the import of all foreign-made assault rifles. Such an action would not require Congressional approval. The Bush Administration has specifically authorized the importation of SKS assault rifles from both Yugoslavia and Albania.

"Armed hunters were no match for one person firing an SKS assault rifle," said Kristen Rand, VPC legislative director. "This sad incident illustrates why the SKS is also a leading cop-killing rifle in America today."

Rand pointed out that the SKS assault rifle was not covered by the recently expired 1994 federal assault weapons ban. The VPC criticized the 1994 law as inadequate and favors enactment of a tougher version of the law that would ban the SKS and many other assault weapons that easily slipped through the old law's loopholes.

"Even though the 1994 law was easily circumvented by the gun industry, Congress has failed to move on a strong replacement law. President Bush could, with the stroke of a pen, tighten the import ban and stop the import of all foreign-made assault rifles," Rand said.

She noted that both the President's father, former-President George H.W. Bush, and former-President William J. Clinton stopped the import of hundreds of thousands of assault weapons by using their executive authority under firearms import and trade laws. Under the current Bush Administration, specific foreign-made assault rifles, including some SKSs, have returned to the marketplace.

"Armed Hunters No Match For SKS Assault Rifle"

Easy solution. Do like my little brother who hunts with a SKS. Works pretty adequately for deer where he hunts.

Of course, hunters are no match for druggies protecting a covert meth lab or marijuana patch, either.

idjits.

Of course you're right. Only one of the hunters had a firearm and others were shot in the back. Did you really expect the VPC to tell the truth about the situation? They haven't in the past, so why should they start now.

I've grown accustomed to them using misleading terms like assult weapon, but we should call them on it when they are lying.

So far in 2004, at least six law enforcement officers have been slain by SKSs

Is that true? Sounds pretty high to me. If that is wrong and we can show they are outright lying about one of the few hard facts, then it's easier to explain how statements such as "armed hunters are no match for assult rifle" are hocus pocous.

The murderer could have used any rifle to do the deed. Even a bolt or lever action. So are those "assualt rifles" as well?

The part the really gets me is that if that @55hat had run over the hunters with an Toyota Prius then the left would brand him as a hero animal rights activist.

That press release is dated Nov 22, 2004.

Not to sound cold and heartless, and if I do, I apologize, but only 6 officers shot with an "assault weapon" in an 11 month period, nationwide doesn't sound like a lot. I know even 1 is 1 to many but I would be willing to bet that this is not the leading cause of the murdering of police officers.

So when is this country going to label bolt action rifles as "assault rifles" too?

No, those are armor-piercing anti-aircraft sniper rifles. You need to work on your gun grabber lingo.

"Unarmed, peaceful hunters no match for motivated, murdering idiot hiding in camo".

If you read the accounts, after killing his first victim, this Vang idiot switched his coat to camo and only shot at the unarmed folks who came out to the deer stand.

AND he was using a Saiga, not an SKS.

Yeah -- the RIFLE trespassed, the RIFLE turned around and shot the first victim and the RIFLE ran after others and shot them in the back.

Good thing Vang held on to that rifle, or it might have done even more damage.

I was wrong, the three in Alabama, one in Indiana, and two more in 'Bama in January. The distribution, or rather concentration of them in one state shows how weird the statistic is, but it is true. Sad.
