I'm looking to top off my AR308 build with a Vortex Viper PST Gen II 3-15x44 FFP. That's pretty much the top of .y optic budget for this build. I've fiddled with them in the store, but how do they work in the real world? What height rings do I need to clear the bell but keep it as low as possible? And is there something else in that price range I should be looking at?

I assume that you mean 5x-25x? I'm quite partial to my 3x-15x and 5x-25x; I think that the Viper PST GenII is a good basic optic that serves most needs well, especially for the price point. I am a luddite, so all of mine are MOA and not MRAD. You're gonna want to mount it in a standard-height AR ring/mount setup; I have used both the Aero lightweight and the DD double ring mounts.

I have three 5x25 Vortex Vipers on my rifles including my Rock River LAR8 (AR10 clone) and they have always worked well for me. I go with MRAD myself.

I have the Viper PST gen II 1x6x24 on a Ar-10. I like it a lot the other then the zoom is a little stiff. I actually just ordered a throw lever for it a few days ago. I thought it would loosen up with use. But it's still about the same.

I have a PST Gen II 5-25x50, we have shot it in PRS matches, and it is sitting on a .22 right now, I shot an NRL-22 match with it. It worked very well for both applications. It's a big step up from the Gen I. They can be had at a great price right now around the web. Gave $700 for mine. It will serve you well.

Gen II 3-15

Gen II 5-25

30MM 1.46 height XLR rings

30MM 1.54 height Vortex rings

Sigh, dang thumbs, I mean the 3-15x44...

Thanks for the input. It'll mostly see use at our local rifle match. Never more than 600y, but now I have a sort of reason to take the class and use that range at the club.

The price at EuroOptic is killer, but I have to wait for my tax refund...

Yesterday, Nichols Outfitters (Birmingham), had the Razor Gen II 4.5-27x56 for $1299.99, so of course I ordered one.. They called me today and said the price was a mistake, and they are refunding my money. Dang it. :)
