Sen. John Edwards...
...is my senator. I wrote him the following:
Dear Senator Edwards,
I would like to extend my gratitude to you for your vote in committee to reject the background checks legislation. You took a stand for law-abiding citizens and we all appreciate it. Thank you for representing your constituents well and rejecting purely emotional arguments. It was a pleasure to have spoken to you in December as well as just to say hello at the GA building on Monday. You demonstrated through your vote today that you are both reasoned and principled in legislating. I am proud to have you as my senator, and look forward to working with you in the future. Thank you again.
Please feel free to send some variation of the same. He took the time to meet with me for over an hour in Roanoke. It was quite rewarding to see that he bucked his party (read: Gov. Kaine) and voted rationally. Sorry if it seems like I am sucking up to him, but he also represents Blacksburg, and I am sure that Tech put the pressure on him. I am quite glad that he made the choice to vote the way he did. VT must have been on him to push the "loophole" bill through.
Regards,
