Visa and Master Card pause plans to track gun related purchases

As noted, both entities have paused plans to track purchases of certain types, including firearms thanks to pushback from 2A advocates and threats from states to sue.

I believe certain states (possibly Texas) has told these companies that the State will cease doing business with these card companies (or something like that) which can cost Visa/Master Card billions. Discover probably doesn't care because they only hold about 2% of the market. This is what I understood.

The decision is, at the same time, also a defeat for gun control groups. There had been hope that categorizing credit and debit card purchases would allow authorities to potentially see red flags — like significant ammunition purchases — before a mass shooting could happen.

In my case, I make "significant ammunition purchases" planning for the military matches at the gun club by buying ammunition on my credit union Visa debit card at stores and on-line. So Visa would alert the authorities and red flag me as a potential mass shooter? Seriously?

WE had a potential school shooting headed of locally because an alert patent and a child mental health professional caught social media postings by two high schoolers blatantly planning to out do Kleibold and Harris (Columbine). Did not involve red flagging ammo buyers with credit cards. Was stopped by identifying potential school shooters expressing intent (and thy had acquired some arms and ammo).

"Pause" does not mean "stop". This is just them biding their time until they can start collecting this information. They're waiting on a crisis that takes over the news cycle or a shift to the left in Congress and it'll return.

"Preventing the next mass shooting" is a cover story. I mean, who doesn't want to prevent mass shootings, right? So they say that excuse as justification. What they really want is a guns/no guns database.
