Visited a LGS today

I visited a local shop in a nearby town today (Abilene, Tx). They had just about every kind of powder in stock, various Vihtavuori and Alliant, Varget, 4064. 4895, etc. but prices are about 2x what they were the last time the shelves were fully stocked. 700x that used to be $15 was priced $34.95
They also had every kind of primer except LR. But they did have, and I’m almost ashamed to admit I bought, BR-2’s at $190 a brick.
Is this the ‘new normal’? Or just the last round of obscene prices as supply starts to return?

190$ per 1,000 primers really is where buying loaded ammunition starts to make more sense. I am holding off buying any reloading components for a while I have a decent stockpile and will shoot more .22LR to help it last. H4350 for 60$ per pound hurts a bit when you're going through 65 grains per round in a 7mm magnum. It will get less action this summer in favor of .223 and .308 that both operate more economically.

Was that low priced powder from the same LGS? Or are we comparing against a national retailer?

The former "big box stores" that dealt in firearms/ammo/components/etc had the buying power and volume needed to keep prices low.

Mom & Pop won't have the same leverage...

Want to load? Pay the price. Costs go up sometimes and down sometimes.

I bought this July 1988 and was happy with the price.

Sold it December 2014. New buyer was just as happy and even drove from Ontario to get it.

But he paid six times what I did.

(Sorry, it was a shameless way to show off, but ran across this picture this AM and had to do it.)

THAT ^^^^ is a beautiful car. My uncle had a '65 convertible with three deuces. I've seen pictures of it but wasn't born until '67, and have no memories of it, if I ever saw it at all.

Yep! Prices go up and down, although they trend upwards over time. Still deals to be had if one watches or just gets lucky. I just picked up 2K LPP, one brick was $20 more than the other, bought at two different LGS. First brick was $110, second was $130.

I bought them because I want to shoot and I need them if I want to keep reloading. I wish prices would come down, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Thanks, but can tell you selling that thing was a blessing and Al Gore's internet made it possible.

In 67 I was in HS chasing Donna who lived down the street. Today it would be stalking or trolling, but she seemed to like it:)

As you know, we have no LGS herebouts or certainly none selling reloading stuff. I have to drive the 30 miles to your old stomping grounds in Gainesville just to see if Cabela's has anything on the shelf. And if I made that drive and they did in fact have something, I'd buy it and be happy (Even if I grumbled just a bit.)

Found this in my stash the other day...from June 2020 as the prices were rising. Was I excited? Yep, until I picked up the box and found it was empty.

Our local stores stopped carrying reloading supplies (for the most part) right after Y2K. I guess people got in a bulk ammo mindset and quit buying components. Florida is kinda weird that way. The folks that move here seem to be of an evacuation mindset: don’t get stuff that can’t survive a hurricane. I guess crates of ammo are safer and more portable than components.

LGS has nothing, will carry nothing, is sick of me asking if he’ll order anything. And he has now stopped selling guns on consignment. If it’s not in SportsSouth you can’t get it there.

Never considered the potential hurricane loss angle, but it sure makes sense.

I was lucky that I only lived 2 miles from Cabela's. And sometimes they had good deals, and usually were about the same as ordering online by the time shipping was calculated, at least for the small amounts I was buying.

Now my nearest Cabela's is in Charleston, about a 70 mile drive one way with $9 in tolls. So $18 in tolls and about 7 gallons of gas round trip which keeps me from going except for when I take her up there for a doctors appt. We do have a Sportsmans Warehouse in Morgantown, about 180 miles one way, and they have better prices than Cabela's. I usually stop in when I take her for a doctors appt up there since it's right there. Not worth the drive otherwise.

And we have two LGS in Beckley, and at least a few others within 20 miles or so that I haven't bothered to visit yet, although I should. I wouldn't think their prices would be any better though, and in stock items are probably similar in both price and availability.

Is what it is.

Is what it is.

Wherever you go, there you are.

Truthfully, and to pharaphrase Rush... nothing is constant but change. Prices go up, prices go down, and there is the endless tug-o-war between supply and demand, offset by manufacturing and transportation. Anyone's guess is as good and anyone else's.

Here in Dallas, where we have Cabelas, Academy, Scheels, BPS, and numerous LGSes... it is just as volatile as you folks who live in the Back 40, simply because the demand is just as great (more people) even though the supply is greater (more stores.)

Yeah but I don't like the cowboys nor their cast out coaches. So there.

At least we all have the Internet and as I say frequently, that's my LGS like it or not.
