I have a vz 58 that I tried to zero. To correct the point of impact I needed to move the front sight to the right. I have moved it to the right as far as it will go but it isn't enough. What might be my problem?

Bent barrel will also do that.

Either way, it's not a trivial fix. Send it back to whom sold it to you.

What brian said- it's going to take some machining to fix, talk to Czechpoint if that's where you got it- they should take care of you.

Are you sure you're moving it the right way?
That, sir, is a good question! Remember that you move the rear sight in the direction you want the bullet to go (if it shoots left, move the sight to the right), however the front sight is an entirely different story...you need to move it to the impact (if it shoots left, move the sight to the left) to make proper corrections.

If that doesn't cure the problem, you have a horribly canted sight (that should immediately be visible just by looking at the rifle, or something severely wrong with the rifle (like the aforementioned bent bbl). Either of these will require a smith, and if possible it would be best to send it back (particularly if it isn't a canted sight).

:)

I think you have a typo in your post, the front sight would have to be moved to the right if it was impacting left.

Mav's correct. Moving the front sight to the right, say, will point the barrel to the left when you look down the sights.

That always drives me crazy at the range and I sometimes end up having to sketch it out on the back of a target to convince myself. Gun is impacting to the left.

Impacting Rear sight OR Front sight
Left to Right to Left

Nope, I got it right (though there are probably better ways to articulate what I said)...further proof of how confusing this can be (particularly if you are making corrections at the range, which is about the only way to make any progress). I think Carl is on the right track with his diagram; as it makes it easy to visualize.

:)

Yes, Maverick is right. Pushing the front sight to the left will make you turn the gun to the right to attain proper sight alignment again. I always end up drifting my sight in the wrong direction and missing the target entirely before realizing my error.

A carry-over from archery where there is only a front sight (pin):
front sight chases the impact

If you're shooting right, move the front sight to the right.

Not necessarily anymore...those newfangled compound bows have a peep in the string (often paired with a fibre-optic front sight with stadia for several ranges).
