I think I got a nice deal on this gun but would like to hear what folks think it might be worth as well as their general impressions of the 228 in general. I had no intention of buying a Sig P Series but this one just caught my eye and seemed like a good deal, so it followed me home.

The gun has its original finish with only minimal wear around the muzzle area. It does appear to have been holstered but the wear isn't too bad.

It has the original box, test target, and manual. The Serial numbers all match - gun, box, test target. It is stamped KA.

The gun did come with the original sights and I have them but I switched them out, for now, with night sights.

That is a nice P228. I would say its worth $500 to $600 depending on your local market.

$380 is way too low. If I could find a 228 at that price I would buy it in a heart beat and I already own 2. Lol

Nice P228!!

The P228 is one of finest combat handguns ever made and are in fairly high demand.

I own a Zurich Police trade in that is in at least 98 percent condition and looked to have barely been shot if ever.

You easily have a $650 P228 in that condition and with original box/manual/target to someone looking for a nice P228.

Enjoy.

What I love about THR - I post a thread about a 228 and within minutes a guy who goes by sigarms228 responds to my inquiry. Awesome and Thank You!

Will this take 226 or 229 mags or are they 228 specific? If so can you point me in the right direction?

...

I think it will take 229/9mm mags.. Not 226 (grip length different) or if they would work they may stick out of the bottom some.. dunno

Enjoy, I got one NIB 228 w/Sig 3-dot night sights sometime last year..

It will take P226 mags. They will stick out the bottom but there are xgrip adapters which fit Mecgars which make them look flush fit. You can take a 17 round P226 Mecgar and use in the P228 making it 17+1. This is how my carry 228 is setup.

Happy to do so!

I use Mecgar 15 round flush fit magazines in my P228.

There are 17 rounder SCT also but they command a bit more premium price and have extended baseplate

As rellascout mentioned P226 magazines will fit but stick out of the bottom and look funny though you can get the adapter.

What is the date code (two letters) on the front chin of the slide? Is the gun marked "Made in W Germany", or just "Made in Germany" ? Looks like it only came with one mag, but that shouldn't knock the value down much as mags are readily available and relatively cheap, especially if you buy Mec-Gar brand. I would guess $450-$550, maybe even $600 because it has the original box and papers.

Sorry if there's duplicate info. I had composed my reply but forgot to submit it before I went to dinner.

The code is ka and it is west german

KA gives you a date of 1990. I have a '94 P228 that still says W. Germany on the slide, so I guess they had a bunch of slides left over or just didn't feel like retooling to make it say Germany for them. Another thing to look at would be the inside of the grip panels. It will have a "clock" with the last two digits of the year and an arrow pointing to the month of manufacture of the grips. There should also be a similar marking on the bottom of the mag if it is a stock Sig mag. I would say it's worth between $500 and $600, If I could find one for $380 I would buy it immediately!

Oh, I absolutely love my 228. Excellent balance and accuracy, great trigger and exceptional reliability. If I were to pick another sig to get, it would very likely be another 228.

Are you guys carrying your sigs concealed? Its thicker than my 1911 but i would like to give it a shot.

My Sig 228 is my only carry gun right now. I use a Crossbreed Supertuck and can conceal it without too much trouble. A good belt makes it a LOT easier.

W. German Sig P228 in excellent condition, with original cardboard box and test target and manual, $380? In your dream, maybe.
That would easily fetch $600-$650.

From the pictures I would say you have a $500-$600 gun there maybe more because of the test target. What kind of shape are the frame rails in? Make sure you keep them nice by always keeping the right amount of grease on them.

$380 would be a low end dealer offer. with the correct box, spare magazine and all other goodies.
The gun could retail for an easy $500 in that condition and maybe a bit higher in some areas.

Thanks for all the replies. I have no intention of selling this one. I figure it's a nice gun and a little piece of history so why not hang on to it and enjoy it. I gave it a better cleaning this morning and I would say that the rails and various internals are in nice shape.

Yes I pulled off the grip panels and you are correct it's a 1990. I didn't know that information along with the month of manufacture was indicated there. Great info.

I just picked up a SIG P228 too!

I have had SIG's in the past (239, 226) and, after going through a few other guns, decided that a SIG was the gun for me (in addition to a .45acp 1911 I already have).

After doing quite a bit of looking and research online, I felt that the 228 was the very best option.

The frames are identical to SIG 229's and so any 229 component can be used. This is a great advantage in finding parts, which sets this model apart from the 225.

The slide is 1.5 oz lighter than the slide on the 229, and so the 228 balances better and is significantly less top heavy.

There are standard 15 round mags available and it can take SIG226 17 round mags (with the xgrip). GREAT...so two magazines for this, give me the round count of 4 of my 1911 mags.

A quick first trip to the range showed that this gun is one of the most accurate handguns I have used, with the exception of a full sized 1911. And just as accurate as the old P226 I had.

Mine is a 1996 model and has "Made in Germany" stamped on the slide. Triple matching serial numbers.

I think the above are some of the many reasons why many are now writing that THIS model is quickly becoming THE SIG to collect and shoot. And we are now seeing prices going very high for some of these. Even $800.

Anything under $550 seems to be a good deal.

My best to all

J

Well i just put 100 rounds of speer lawman jhps through it and it functioned with perfect reliability. Unfortunatly i think its going to take me some time to get used to the trigger because at 25 feet my accuracey was off. On the upside the recoil on this gun was almost non existent.

The online re-salers just sold out of these at $300 a piece, IIRC. Maybe it was 350 shipped. No kidding.

Not sure how you guys are valuing at $500-800?

You could not have made a wiser purchase. I have a number of SIGs, which chamber 9mm, 357 SIG, and .45 ACP. They all shoot accurately and reliably. Frankly, I never fired a SIG until my agency replaced our Beretta with the P228. It was love at first shot with me. Unfortunately, my agency replaced the P228 with the P229, but I purchased my own P228. I say unfortunately, but there is nothing wrong with the P229. I can tell the difference in the way they handle, but both shoot accurately. The P228 was made only for 9mm. The P229 is available in 9mm, 357 SIG, and .40. If you haven't guessed it, SIGs are habit-forming. You'll buy more.

Read with confidence what Rellascout posts about the SIG. He knows SIGs.
