Thanks for all the comments and positive confirmation on the 'find'. I like the reliability on this gun. I recently sent a new glock 19 back for a new ejector because it was throwing brass in my face. I honestly feel like i can trust this sig more than the glock.

Jackspinesavages, i am suprised that you saw west german 228s going for $300. That seems wildly low for any sig. Maybe you are thinking of the P6? Even a quick gunbroker scan reveals prices north of $600. If you can remember where you saw that pricing please post it because i would like to watch for future sales.

The online re-salers just sold out of these at $300 a piece, IIRC. Maybe it was 350 shipped. No kidding.
Could you please post a link to that site? Are you sure it is not Swiss Police P225s that Aims.. had for $340? I doubt very much that they were P228s because even Wid... has Swiss Police turn-in P228s for $465. I'd like to see for myself.

Regardless, hypothetically, the guns you saw were almost surely foreign police turn-in guns with a lot more wear, at least externally, than the one CTGunner has, which is a commercial version. I believe police "surplus" guns have historically been valued less than commercial versions. For example, a few years ago P6s, German Police versions of the P225, found their way to US shores for about $250 originally, but went up to $350 just a year later. Meanwhile, nice used commercial P225s were still going for $500 and up. If someone is just looking for a shooter, then former police guns are great deals, because they are cheaper, price-wise.

Not sure how you guys are valuing at $500-800?

There were a very few for sale at $350 as a few SIGforum members bought some. They reported that they were well worn on the outside, obviously had been fired a quite a bit, and were filthy indicating poor to no maintenance.

That is a FAR cry from a P228 in excellent condition, that looks to have low round count, and with factory box, paper work, and test target.

If you research GunBroker past auctions you can routinely find P228s in the OP condition that have SOLD for $700 and sometimes way above.

There are recent auctions of NIB unfired P228s SELLING for around $1300.

The P228 is in high demand and condition dicates price with more pristine examples in very high demand.

It is a crying shame what has happened to Glock. I have a Gen 2 Glock 19 in all original condition that I probably never will sell though I don't really shoot it anymore since it and current Glock 19 is outclassed in every regard by my new Walther PPQ.

SigForum is my usual hangout. I must have missed that thread because I don't remember reading anything about $350 P228s. Who sold them?

Those Sarco pistols were pretty battered, the OPs pistol is much, much nicer.
I paid $450 for this one in a newer, replacement Sig blue plastic hardcase with two 13 shot magazines and a manual.

226 magazines will work just fine if you need a couple extra rounds and they don't protrude all that mach from the bottom of the gun.

Thanks, sigarms228. I missed that thread. Must have been during the couple of weeks I was off the internet.

I checked out the Sigforum thread. Those Sarco ad ones were pretty old and definitely quite used. The one mentioned in the thread was a 1989 vintage.

I just picked up a 1996 P228 in a local GS for $525. Happy with that deal. Gun is in excellent condition, looks as though it had hardly been fired. Frame is flawless, slide is 95% with just the usual wear, no bare spots, rust, dings or scratches. Two mags, manual and the plastic case.

Really accurate.

As someone mentioned above...i too have seen used ones go for A LOT of money on GB.

It seems as though now is the right time to get one.

Best

Quick question on magazines for the 228.

There is a 17 round Mec-Gar mag available. However, the 228 can also take P226, 17 round magazines and use the X-Grip magazine extension on the bottom.

I looked at both online and it almost seems that the 226 mags with the X-grip are shorter and more compact, then the Mec-Gar P228/229 17 round mags. The X-grip seems to form a better finger groove than what is on the bottom of the Mec-Gar 17 round magazine.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with these?

As a side note...I use X-grip extensions on full sized 1911 mags on my compact Kimber Ultra....and really like them.

Thanks

Resist the temptation to detail strip the slide. I gave in to the temptation and to protect my sanity, had to send it back, in basket case configuration, for professional re-assembly.

That gun looks to be in pretty exceptional shape and could certainly fetch over $500, likely even over $600. Nice find sir. If I were into DA/SA guns, the 228 would certainly be at the top of my list.

Ok - Well I got the gun for an out the door price, including tax, of $500 which I thought was great. So, I feel pretty good about the deal now. Of Course the night sights were another $100 but I think they are worth it.

I use the older P226 Mecgar 17 rounders with the older Xgrip. Sorry about the crappy pics but just snapped them for reference with the iPhone. I prefer these over the current 17 & 18 round Mecgars. They are much less blocky and in my hand feel much more natural. I also think that they conceal better because of the contour.

Thanks for posting those pics. I think they show the difference very well. This really points me towards 17 rnd 226 mags with the x-grip. I agree...it looks as though it makes for a better grip overall.

Thanks

That is a nice P228. I would say its worth $500 to $600 depending on your local market.

$380 is way too low. If I could find a 228 at that price I would buy it in a heart beat and I already own 2. Lol

Ditto, I've never seen one go that low, especially in the condition this ones in. I'd put it closer to $600 than $500. I paid over $500 for mine with no box/original paperwork and I think I got a good deal.

There was a time IIRC around 2002 that CDNN bought a ton of used P228s from Sig. They bottomed out right around $400. I had one of those shot it a lot and sold it to a buddy who really wanted it. The only ones I have seen lower than that in the recent past are the beaters Sarco recently got which I think were a good deal if holster wear and a ding or two don't bother you.

The last P228 I picked up is the Zurich trade in pictured above. IIRC I paid about $500 for it with 3 mags, box and night sites which are still useable but a bit dim.

I paid $500 for a Swiss p228 in fall of 2009. Was nowhere near as nice external condition as rellascout's or sigarms228, but mechanically excellent.

A friend of mine has a 228 that his father bought in '91 (the year my friend was born). Its an extremely solid feeling, slick shooting pistol. I am partial to my 1911, but if I had to have a DA/SA 9mm, I would have no problem with it being a 228.

I paid $405 for my '94 P228 in very good to excellent condition with case and 1 mag on GunBroker a couple of years ago. There were very few bidders and for some reason they didn't bid it up. I was nervous that I might have bought a dog of a gun (though it didn't look like it from the pictures), but when I actually received it, I felt like I had stolen it because other guns in the same condition were going for $500-$650 even back then.

I just pulled my 228 out of the safe I bought new in 95'ish for $450. Its a nice pistol and am proud to own it. Mine has hardly been shot or carried. I bought a Glock 19 soon after and it took over. The Sig is much nicer and has a great trigger. The Glock just carries so nicely and you can't hurt it (and if you did who cares?). I would like to pick up a 225 one day. Even though they are a single stack they fit my hand great. The OP made a nice find. I need to get my 228 out more often.
