Here's one on my hip back in January of 1970...about 50 clicks north of Saigon. Issued when I arrived, I carried it for the first three months of my tour as Forward Air Controller flying for 5th Special Forces guys at An Loc.
As a young Lt., I found it was a good revolver, but the grips (without a filler) made DA shooting tough not to mention the underpowered issue 130 gr FMJ ammunition. I soon packed it away for a Browning Hi Power carried in a Tanker rig across my chest when flying. Best Regards, and congrats on a fine handgun...arguably one of Smith's finest. Rod

Thanks for your service and posting that great photo! Crazy they didn't supply you with more potent ammo than that cheap plinking ammo I use at the range. Looks like you had some pretty potent ammo under the wing though.

Not to hi-jack the thread, but....the Air Force also issued us signaling rounds along with the FMJ's....six of them as I recall. They were a form a tracer that would hopefully penetrate the triple canopy jungle in lll Corps, pin pointing our position for rescue acft. Trouble was, in the event of a forced landing/shoot down, shooting anything up through the overhead foliage would get you a quick dose of helicopter M-60 rounds with rockets shortly thereafter. I knew a half dozen FAC's during my time there, and we all carried 1911's or more rarely, Hi-Powers in addition to a Car-16 while flying.

All of that notwithstanding, the Smith M-15 was and still is, one fine .38 Special. Best regards, Rod

I always coveted Air Force CI counterpart that I was friends with who was issued a M15 2" . I been looking for one for almost 50 years butthe right one for a good price never turned up I do have a beautiful Nickle Model 18 no dash tho.

I passed up a Model 15 2" when I worked at the last gun shop I worked at, about 7 years ago. It had come in in a bulk buy (trade) with the local Sherriff's Dept. We maintained their service weapons, they gave us the evidence guns to sell, though they made us cut some up, like the Davis/Bryco/Jennings/Raven types, and a very nice B&T 9mm one time, because it looked too scary, I guess. I got a Colt Cobra instead, we each got to pick out one gun to buy, prices were too good to pass up, and I got first pick, because I was the one that test fired and cleaned them.
