Okay, I just wanted to let off a little steam about why we always have to wait for the 45 acp version of a new gun model to be released. I know the 9mm and 40 are the more popular caliber for law enforcement and maybe the general public but what about us 45 guys? We finally got the 45 XD which I hear is an outstanding pistol and the Kahr P45 but I'm still looking for the new HK 45, Beretta PX4 and S&W M&P! Wouldn't it be refreshing to see a manufacturer come out with the 45 first and let the 9mm guys wait the next time ;). Sigh... okay rant off... I feel a tiny bit better now getting that off my shoulders.

P.S. I really have nothing against the 9mm. I like it as a matter of fact but over time I have just found the 45 to be more to my liking. No "9" bashing here please :)

marketing...

I think this is basic marketing. Let's face it, would we be as interested in the 1911 platform if it hadn't been the US Military sidearm for 70 odd years? What if a .45 version of the Luger was adopted instead of, or just after the 1911 was adopted? As a society, we base a lot of our purchases on "keeping up with the Joneses" and buying on name recognition or reputation.

One thing that is a side effect and benefit of the major mfgr's catering to LE contracts first is that the police get to "work the bugs out" first. So that by the time the personal protection market gets a hold of it, the gun has a pretty good reputation already that the mfgr can point to.

Just something to think about...

:)

Well, I feel even worse. I've been waiting for someone to develop a .50 BMG 1911 for years! :D

I already have a p245 which is close enough for me. Great gun but again, it's not a new model. I also have a Taurus PT145 Mil Pro which may qualify. Did Taurus bring out the 45 at the same time as the 9 and 40 in the PT series?

It may have to do with the following:
1) Police departments use 9mm or .40S&W. Since those contracts are where the gravy is, that's what gets served first.
2) European makers are fond of the little rounds. A 9mm can be upsized to .40S&W without too much trouble, but going to .45ACP is a bigger deal. They start small, and then think about upsizing to .45.
3) New guns are infants, and aren't big, tough, or manly enough for the .45ACP.:neener:

I'm just talking out of my rear, but I think #1 is probably most of the argument. While profit margins are better on civilian sales, the real volume is police departments.

Probably.

Don't forget that for the first fifty years of it's existence there was virtually only one manufacturer of the design. And it was far from the most popular selling handgun.
In fact it was around the same time that the US Military was looking for something to replace the ".45" that the new makers came into being and the popularity of the 1911 pattern pistol soared.

It seems that as more and more people turned away from the revolver and turned to the automatic that the 1911 pattern starting proving just how good of a design it really was. And as more and more "new" guns appear the more popular Browning's masterpiece becomes.

As someone once said of the .30-06, "It's too good."

There's a company that makes a .50 pistol caliber version. .50 GI I think it's called. No BMG, they boast that widening the gun for the larger diameter barrel/cartridge are the only changes. A moderate .50 cartridge like that would probably be appealing to a good portion of the market if you could get a decent priced gun for it.

You think you've got it rough, try being a 10mm guy. We wait on a lot of ships that don't come in. More often than not, we have to settle for the .45 version when it arrives, knowing that the 10mm version of (insert nifty new pistol) is most likely a pipe dream.

You know it'll be 6 months or a year and you get excited when they announce shipment, but I nearly crawled out of my skin when I found out Kimber was going 10mm a couple years back.

9mm? .40 S&W? what? I'm confused... handguns are chambered for something different than .45 ACP? why would any one want that..?

Well, if you had a revolver, you might want it in .357 or .45 Colt. But I can't see any need for any other centerfire cartridge in a handgun.:neener:

taurus makes a tracker in .45 ACP!

.45s

Slightly OT, but I have a question. Why is it that if I want an all-metal large-frame auto in .45ACP, with a magazine capacity of 10 or more rounds, I have few alternatives besides a 1911? I would like to see Beretta come out with a .45ACP version of their 92 series. I would also like to Browning make a .45 version of their Hi-Power.

.45 hi power would be nice.

don't they make a cz 75 in .45? whats the mag capacity on that? why do you need more than 8 rounds of 45 in one mag anyway?

Be happy you don't live in Maryland - even though the XD45 is in stores, and you can handle it, it's not "Maryland approved" and thus can't be sold without the state giving the OK... which, the best of my knowledge, hasn't happened yet.

Ridiculous.

I think it's just the requirement of a larger frame for a .45, whereas the .40 and 9x19 can be made using the same frame.

What I want to see is conversions to take an XD45 to .40 (or better yet .357 Sig)
