Hello everyone, I am a nubie with bad spelling but I was wondering if I could troublr some senior members for some advise. I decided to go through a local gun dealer for my first riflr purchase - a basic bushmaster rifle. Now I have paide the dealer in full two weeks and 1 day age and when I payed him he assured me the riflr would be in in lesss than three weeks. It was quite expensive. As of this day he has yet to call me. I just spoke to him last week and he would not give me an ETA and his response was that he has not been able to meet with any wholesalers yet. Did this guy take my money and use it form something else or is this normal. Any input is greatly appreciated. I am feelling like i was ditched and I should have taken my money to Bas pro or Dicks and purchased something from their stock in a color I realy dont want. Why so long? Thank you.

Depends on the backlog from the distributors he gets his stock from. I waited a full three weeks for my Springfield M1A to come in, back when I ordered it in December 2006 (picked it up in January 2007). I was in no particular rush, though.

I'd say give the gentleman the benefit of the doubt and wait a full month, and then ask again for an ETA. If he can't give you one, ask for your money back (you kept your receipt, right?) and order it elsewhere.

Thank You

This makes me feel a little better. Yes I have my reciept, I just dont care for the way these local dealers string people along. It seeems like a common rifle nothing exotic. I realy dident want to go through the hassle of asking for my money back. It seeems this guy is known by other locak dealers but I have yet to hear anythig bad. I do feel he only orders ofer the phone and does not use the web at all. I think If I ordered this online it would be quicker, I am just not at all happy or satastied with the way theu do business. All the gun shops around here look the same - the only stock they have is carcases and half broken arms - nothing new in stock. I wich I lived somewhere where there was a fully sticked shop where people were not stringing you along. One gun shop told me thaty some people wait up to a year for soem guns-Is thhie accurate? Its not the money its the lack of customer care. I work in IT annd make the money. I am also not a very patient man, which dosent help.

Wait time for buying on-line is usually 1-2 weeks. A lot of locals shoot themselves in the foot and then complain about customer loyalty. Loyalty works both ways or it doesn't work at all.

I Agree

Yes I do feel customer loyaly works both ways and needs to be earned. If I ever get what I ordered I will let everyone know. Aparently money dosen't have any motivational effect on some people.

AFMAN9000 Now I have paide the dealer in full two weeks and 1 day age...... his response was that he has not been able to meet with any wholesalers yet. Did this guy take my money and use it form something else or is this normal....

1. Two weeks and he hasn't even placed an order?:scrutiny: NOT NORMAL and unacceptable by any dealer to be that lazy.
2. I am a licensed dealer and have yet to actually meet a wholesaler. Distributors/wholesalers are a phone call away....it takes five minutes to order a gun from a wholesaler.
3. He may be a thief at worst, or just lazy and indifferent at best.

With the economy in the tank it is very much a buyers market. Manufacturers are sitting on inventory and prices are dropping every week.

From what I've read of your posts he has not yet contacted a wholesaler or distributor to even order your gun. Get your $$$$ back, find another transfer dealer, order and pay for the gun yourself, and have it shipped to your dealer of choice who will charge you a reasonable transfer fee.

Some wholesalers do have salesmen who travel around and call on regular customers. Some but definitely not all.

Yes it's possible to wait a year for a special order firearm or something not readily available. I understand the wait for an OOW BAR is something like 6-8 months or was recently. But this is definitely not the norm.

I agree, wait the amount of time he indicated it would take, then inquire about delivery. It would not be unreasonable to ask for a refund if he can't give you a delivery date.

When the three weeks are up, and assuming you don't have the rifle, remind him of his delivery assurances to you. Unless he's able to convince you that the delay is reasonable and that you'll have it in the very near future, cancel the order. If you paid by credit card you should dispute the charges in a letter to the bank (credit card company). Do not pay off the credit card charge.

It's your call, you can read the guy better than us.
For me, I would get my money back.
I won't pay someone to treat me poorly.
If the dealer's attitude isn't what you require of someone you're handing money to, Find another dealer. There are a few shops in my area and I only deal with the one that treats me like i'm important to his business, no matter if I'm spending $8.00 or $800.00.
This is the relationship I require from any merchant for recieving my business.
If you go to Dick's you don't have to take something off the rack, they have a firearms book and will order anything in the book for you, Paid up front , of course.
The wait might be the same but you should walk out feeling like your business matters to them, If you don't feel that, don't go back.

Than you everyone, I realy do appreciate the help and information. This is the first gun dealer I have had "the pleasure" of dealing with. I think I will go with someone else next time. As far as my order I may let this ride another week and see if anything progresses. Thank you.

If it was a gun ANY of my distributors had in stock, I'd have it in 3 or 4 days, tops. If they don't have it in stock, it could be months before they get any.

He doesn't have to "meet" with a wholesaler ... all he has to do is make a phone call.

Something here isn't right.

If you estimate the average dealer markup is 20%, I'd offer a deposit of half and the balance upon receipt. If you live somewhere where there's a waiting period, I would pay in full only upon the dealer recieving the firearm and starting the government waiting period.

Any business person who whines they have to fork out cash to pay for the rifle first and is only getting a 50% deposit from you is one you should avoid anyway. Being in business often means being out cash until a customer pays. It comes with the territory.

I sell product that costs about what guns cost and on every deal I get paid two weeks after the product is delivered to the end user. I am out the cash until paid, on every transaction.

yep! you have gotten some good advice as this is how it goes.

If the dealer orders it threw say one of their on line distributors most of them will have the quanity in stock and they will usually always get it in right away. talking about places like davidsons, jerrys, elliott bros ect.

Now dealing with actual firearms manf. on line you alot of times will not get a delivery date unless you call them at the time of purchase.

I would suggest going back and ask him how it is going on your order and if he is having a problem getting that firearm and if so is there anyplace else that stocks it.

I had a dealer order a Weatherby Mark XXII bolt action 22 rifle for me... no money down. A month goes by and I didn't hear from him. I stop in (about hour drive from me) and he calls on the spot to the distributer and said it would be shipped... weeks go by and nothing.... I stopped in again and he acts like he didn't know anything about it. I stopped asking. They are now out of business. Good riddens.

Bought the gun elsewhere and it was in-stock. I only have so much patience.

I have never put money down on a gun I had a dealer order for me. But they knew me and knew I would pay for it when it came in.

I feel your pain, I'm waiting for the background check to come back from county so I can pick up a pistol from Cabelas. Funny though, they found it in their hearts to send me a notice for jury duty. :scrutiny:

As for your situation, go with your gut instinct, if if doesn't feel right, it just might not be. Did he say three weeks from when you purchased it or from when he ordered it? If it's the first one, the fact that he's had your money for two-thirds of the time it was supposed to take to get there and he hasn't even ordered it yet would at least have my ears standing up. I'd give him the full time he said, but not any longer. Hope you get an answer soon one way or the other.

It takes as long as it takes your county to get back to them, can br three days, can be thirty. Some counties save them up all month then do them all in one go. Sometimes they do the same with CCW permits.

What county background check is required for a purchase in WA? The only time the county was involved in any firearm related business I've had is when the Sheriff's office processed my CPL application.

Go in and talk to him, find out what's going on. As a rule, gun dealers don't typically risk their entire livelihood to steal a few hundred bucks.
