Hi All,

I was in Wal-Mart yesterday picking up a brick of .22 LR and as I was checking out, the cashier stopped with her finger poised over the register keys and asked me if I was buying these for a rifle or a pistol. I said 'Rifle' and she hit a key on the register and finished ringing up the order.

Has anyone else been asked this?

My initial thought was that it was for some kind of marketing research. But then I recalled another thread on a forum saying that Wal-Mart doesn't sell handgun ammo - so maybe if I answered "Pistol" she would have had a problem with policy selling them to me. I don't know.

I should have asked her, "What difference does it make?" but didn't think of it at the time. Kinda caught me off guard.

This was just outside of Greenville, SC.

You need to be 21, or older, to buy handgun ammo. But only 18 for rifle ammo. So they are forced to ask in order to complete the sale. If you look to be of marginal age and answer handgun, they may ask for ID.

I always tell them it's for a carbine. :neener:

Just tell them you are making jewelry from the casings.

Wal Mart does indeed sell pistol ammo. That's where I get all of mine.

I usually tell them "BOTH" and let them choose.
It's just the "18 for rifle ammo, 21 for pistol ammo" thing. No big deal.

Walmart asks if you if the ammo is for a rifle or handgun because they will not sell handgun ammunition to anyone under the age of 21.

This isn't a conspiracy. Nor is it new. Walmart has been doing this for years.

There are tons of threads in the archives about this exact thing, so I'm going to go ahead and close this thread.
