Wal-Mart did me a favor today. I went in today, and they had 2 rifle hard cases on clearance for $11. So I bought one, and used it for my 2 rifles I was taking to the range. They had been in flimsy paper gun socks.

Fast forward three hours. My dorm has the laundry room and the gun room in the basement. Walking down the steps, I hit a loose sock someone dropped, and took a nasty tumble. In my hands, I had the two rifles in the case in one hand, and a .50 ammo can with about 20 lbs of ammo in the other. Down the steps both went, along with me. I landed on top of the gun case, and somehow the ammo can managed to take a 90 degree turn and continue down the next flight of stairs.

Can't seem to stop thinking about how easily the rifles could have been badly dinged and dented up, possibly broken had they still been in the gun socks.

2 Questions:

flimsy paper gun socks

Eh? Paper?!

My dorm has the laundry room and the gun room in the basement.

Your college dorm has a 'gun room'? that's cool. Is there like a community reloading bench too?

Kinda ironic that you take a tumble with your rifles in thier first day of new case use. *Paging Mr Murphy...*

haha yes please describe this college. I live off campus solely because I can't even have a paintball gun in my car in school property.

Heh, Michigan Tech (MTU) located in the UP of Michigan, Houghton Michigan to be precise. You get lake effect snow from 3 directions and there's not much around.

The UP tends to breed folks that are pretty laid back. Something about having, uhh... 30 people spread across the whole thing does that. :) If you pull into somebody's driveway they don't chase you off with a shotgun, they come out with a beer for you and one for them to see what you're up to.

I'm impressed! We had a reloading room at my college, but the administration would have stamped out the skeet club if they could.

My college has a gun room in just about every dorm, but only the RA's can get your gun for you, and most of the time you have to walk them through the "secret" procedure of getting the firearms out of the locker.

Not paper really, but something of the sort. Lightweight, something like a coffee filter or cleaning patch. Came from Gander Mountain gunsmith. But yes, very creepy to me.

GigaBust is correct about MI Tech. Being about 10 hours from any major city, and many hours from any city with a population over 5000, tends to get a laid back, rural feel. Heck, the college itself has more people than any city within a two hour drive. Activities this weekend included ice fishing and shooting MN pop cans (seems they don't like you returning out of state cans :p ), and watching all the snow scluptures built for this weekend's winter carnival melt and crash because of the freak 50F weather we have been having. Seeing people walking around campus with guns is no big deal.

Getting guns out is hard sometimes, and I think the 20 or so people with keys just know when I need in, and all disappear together  Actually, my RA is pretty cool about it. It was rainign when we were shooting (well, more sleet, really) so the guns had to be cleaned throughly. Normally, there is no way to do this, as an RA has to be there when you are in the room. He offered to sit down there with us for the 40 minuets :D

Oh, we do have an indoor pistol range right on campus, too.

theCZ - I know what you mean. I have about three trained on how to use their keys now :neener: We al have seperate lockers, though, all the RA does is to open the door to the room. The can't get into the individual lockers, onl you can.

I found one of those dangerous socks on the steps too, when I was up there with my son.....they should outlawed!!! No one needs that many socks, and if dropped they could cause injury or death!!!!! Sounds familiar???

Glad your rifles are ok, Jeff.......oh and you too :)

being a California native (I HATE IT HERE!) just hearing this is interesting. let alone ever being in an environment like that.

I'm a Tech alum, too. Had an apartment over the Downtowner bar. Which dorm are you in?

Place has gotten awfully built up since I was there in the '70s, though, when the nearest fast food place was 100 miles away in Marquete.

Huh. Wondered where my thread went :)

I'm in Douglass Houghton Hall. And yes greg, does sound familiar. But let me be the first to tell you, that if you have a roommate that believes no one needs socks, you wouldn't be talking that way :uhoh: Oh, the fun of living with other people. BTW, did your son decide yet?

2t2 - what do you mean?

Yo, just got to chime in here, greetings from East McNair! I never would have guessed that someone else here would be at MTU.

Yea I got to get my self some hardsided gun cases. All I got are the flimsy paper/cloth kind to.

I hate you..... I live in SOUTH CAROLINA a very "conservitive" gun state with a very liberal smattering of firearm owners. I cant have a gun on campus. Hell I cant even say I have anything more then a pocket knife. Jesus I hope they dont search my room it always looks like a SWAT van had a bad night drinking..... I wonder what they would think with knives reppel gear a few spent shell caseings, GPS, Night Vision etc just laying out and about. Ohh and my books on Spies, espionage, and evil Russian military. I though the south was gun friendly till I came to this Kerry loveing vomitous place. Many say Four more years for Bush, I say one more year for me

Hopefully not to close together considering the amount of moisture that a laundry room creates.

Wouldn't you know it, majic, but they are right next to each other. The alternative is no guns, though :( So I just keep a good coating of oil on them.

eab - don't suppose you're anyone I know? I think there was another person from Tech lurking a while back, too.

flimsy paper gun socks.
Actually, it's Tyvek. Tough material, but as you noted, doesn't provide much padding. Michigan Tech has a heck of a hockey team, I think the even beat the Gophers this year. It must be cool having a gun room in the dorm. The only place there were any weapons at the U of Minn. was at the ROTC Armory, and all we kept there were some Win 52's and Rem. 513's. We borrowed M16's & M60's from the 205 Inf. Regt. No private weapons on campus. (This was 1981-82. MN now has CCW, so maybe they can now, but being The Kremlin of the North, I doubt it.)

Eh... Are we talking about the same Huskies?

Overall: 7-19-1 Conf: 6-16-0 Home: 1-9-1 Away: 5-8-0 Neut: 1-2-0

Yeah, I enjoy being here. Free range time Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, many different rental pistols to choose, thousands of acres of open land to shoot on.

Now, if only we could get some more women up here

Hey, tech hockey pretty much sucks, second best in their divisioin I think, Gophers beat them both times I think.....

I guy on my hall said last year two guys on the hall kept their guns in the room. They registered ONE gun with public safty and put it in whepons storage. So if asked they could say they have a gun in storage. Another guy according to an buddy of mine used a shotgun as door prop last year.

I like it up here.
