Bought my first Old Army back in the '70s. Have a Berdan Sharps repo that I make my own paper cartriges for and love to shoot. Had to replace the original OA with a stainless one. Have been enjoying BP shooting for over 40 years.
Problem: bought a Walker Colt at a gun show. It is an ASM. It is old. But it is in good shape. I should have completely dissasembled the gun first thing. I didn't shoot it but didn't take it down to the last part. I was cocking the hammer and letting it down to get the feel of the timing and it bound up (crud and old cap particles). Like an idiot, I put pressure on the hammer and broke the bolt. I have bought six new bolts from six places that guaranteed me they had "original" old model ASM parts. The original bolt is just a tad longer, is heavier, the bolt sits higher, and the end of the bolt that rides the cam is in the shape of a half circle.
I have a Uberti 2nd model Dragoon and should just forget the ASM. But I can't. I keep messing around with it. Got the thing so it will cock but the timing and indexing are off and it doesn't completely lock up on full cock. I could just buy a Uberti Walker for the amount of money it will take to get this ASM beater up and running but I can't stand looking at a gun I can't shoot.
I'm not the sharpest spoon in the drawer and I know there's folks out there who know know what they are doin' - as opposed to my display of bad judgement and stupidity where this gun is concerned.
Would it be possible to replace the hammer, hand, hand spring, bolt and bolt spring with a reasonable hope of getting a safe lock up?:banghead:

I just visited the VTI gunparts site (google) and find that they have added ASM parts to their list. they also have added the Pietta Lemat Parts.

The problem with ASM described to me by an old hand is that they used parts from many different vendors so that you have to know the vintage of the revolver to even guess at which parts might be a close fit. I also know by experience that they sometimes dropped in ill fitting parts with no effort at making them work.

Thanks mec. The folks at VTI are really great to work with. I bought two bolts from them and did some grinding and fitting. You are right about the vintage of the gun. My guess is that this one is from the 60s or 70s. I also tried Dixie for the original Walker bolt and The Gun Works. They are all very close but not quite as large at the original I have. That's why I was thinking if I replaced all the guts from hammer to trigger, bolt, hand and spring, everything might line up.
Deer Creek Products has come the closest to sending me a bolt that fits. I'll call them and see what they think about replacing all the internal parts.
Thanks again for the input.

If you can't stand to look at a gun that won't work, you can send it to me and I promise that you will never have to look at it again! :) Good luck with it though, hope you get what you need.
