Wally World wanted my SSAN to buy ammo!

I am a youngun and joined the Military right at 17 like stated earler I am quite used to giving out my social for simple things like eating at the chow hall. So when a legitimate corporation asks for my social face to face or when I have contacted them I see no problem giving them my social. What do you think is gonna happen Wal Mart is gonna start getting credit in other peoples names. As long as the kid punching it in the register isn't writing it down you are fine. And for all those conspirators The Goverment gave you your Social Security Number I am pretty sure they know it if they want to. Now put your tin foil hat back on.

I almost never write a check nowadays, I like earning my points/dollars back on my cards to get free stuff!
Anyway WalMart is funny about credit cards..I shop in WM a lot, apparently at random they'll ask for ID, the funny part is it frequently is for some really low purchase, like under $10. They've never asked when I'm spending a couple of hundred. Seems if I was up to something I'd be doing it on the big purchases...
What is with WalMart and Discover? I use mine a lot, it won't read much of the time in their readers, when it worked 5 minutes before at the gas station and works right after anywhere else. Only Discover, and only at WM, Visa goes right through....
Bought a Rossi 22/410 in Walmart a couple of weeks ago, they wouldn't sell me 22 ammo with it! Told me to put the gun in my car after they walked me to the front with it then I could come back in and buy ammo...but not at the same time as a gun purchase:rolleyes: Also in SC with a CWP the purchase doesn't have to be called in to check...not at WalMart- they STILL call it in:scrutiny: Then you get to wait 20 minutes because they can't find the manager to walk the gun to the door...

The government just started this business with SSN at the airport for ticketing.
FWIW, it's not your SSN they want, but a middle name/initial, DOB and gender. I just had to go through the hassle of updating my profile in the government travel system my agency uses.

How about we use the scientific method here. Maybe the SSAN is not for the ammo but for the check? Maybe it's not an anti-gun conspiracy?

Here's a thought, go back there, buy a T-shirt, and pay with a check. See if they ask for your SSAN.

If you've ever done a little digging in through your local County Recorder's files. Many of which are available online you can find out things from old Mortgage and Lien filings etc. about anyone the you need to. It's often all there Name, Birthdate, Social etc. You pull someones credit report (which any idiot can do online for a couple bucks) and you can find out account numbers etc. No one is really safe from ID theft etc.

The best you can do is pull your own credit periodically and see if anything is funky.

Never had that happen before and I try to buy as much ammo at Wal*Mart as possible (good prices!), but I don't write checks. Old fogies write checks. :neener:

Why do people white checks anyway? Don't debit cards accomplish the same thing with less writing and less slowing down the line for me?

Why not call wallmart and ask why they needed it, keep going up in the chain until you get your anwser.

Its for the check. I worked at walmart for a couple years in my college days. I dont know ifts random or what but I always had customers telling me that "I shop here all the time and never get asked for ID". IIRC a drivers licenense number will suffice as well when prompted for an ID number.

What's a check?

Seriously though, I guard my SSN the best I can. I had some chick using my number one time. I called the vendor. All of a sudden, the vendor started treating me like the suspect, instead of working with me. Identity theft sucks. I'd rather be a victim of a gnarly theft and be done with it.

I DON'T do business with WM at all.:barf: They are one of the reasons the world is the way it is today. If more people realized what you are supporting when buying their second rate junk they would probably fail. I can find just as good deals at other places that will use my money to help America. In my experience even the ammo there while cheaper is not as good as at other retailers. :what:

The old axiom "You get what you pay for" is true.

IMHO any company that uses fear and intimidation to keep the employees and vendors in line not worth supporting. :fire:

I have mixed feelings about Walmart. "Fear and intimidation"... hmmm, employees are free to leave anytime they want to and vendors don't have to do business with them unless they choose to. But as a vendor, Walmart can make you a millionaire (or successful) very quickly if you make money on the product. It can also put you into slow death if you aren't making a suitable return on your investment.

Old fogies write checks.

Must be. I can write a check just about as quickly as whipping out the cash. I started writing checks again because it makes me think about spending the money more than whipping out a credit or debit card. I realize counting out 7 or 8 20-dollar bills has the same effect,

but I don't carry that much cash with me normally.... unless I'm buying a gun!!!! :neener:

I had to use checks for several days because the bank borked up my debit card and had to reissue after a security breach (their fault). And then I shop at a few places that take cash or check but no plastic.

Walmart doesn't even need you to fill out the whole check. They run it through the electronic check thing and it reads the routing number off the bottom of the check and takes the money out. It's no different than using the debit card.

No SSN, but. . .

clerk asked to see my Carry Permit. Sold me the max of 6. I came back after getting groc. and wanted to buy more. He said, "Just a minute", and called over another clerk, went on break, and the new guy sold me another 6. But, sadly, this new store no longer sells guns, but store a few miles away does. And ammo at THAT store is higher than at THIS store. Go figger.
