WALTHER P22 Q - Anyone have experience with it

I'm looking for another 22 rimfire auto, strictly for fun. Was at my LGS this afternoon picking up the only range ammo they have, 22lr. I noticed that they had the above in stock. Does anyone have any experience with it. Yay or nay, I can handle the truth. I shoot my 22's a lot, a real lot and in these times shooting my 22's so much I really need it to hold up under heavy usage. I put well over 1000 22rds down range in three days this week.

Yes – a very bad experience; it’s a truly dreadful gun, endless malfunctions, including a non-working safety.

I have one and it really is a fun little plinker. I have not experienced the issues that some have. My only 2 issues are; the grips are small and I have big hands, and I keep comparing it to my Ruger MkII for accuracy. I need to keep remembering I never be able to shoot it as well as my MkII.

Oh yea, and I had the 5” version and hated cleaning it - taking off the muzzle extension. Traded for the shorter barrel and much happier.

I have the S&W M&P22 by Walther. Have had it for a couple of years and 'only' about 500 rounds through it and it has never failed and it has not been religiously cleaned. I happen to love it as it feels like a 'big boy' gun, lol.

I owned one awhile back and it is one of the few firearms I regret parting with. I easily shot 1500 rounds through it in a little over a year. The only issue I had with mine is field stripping with a fixed barrel is quite a learning curve.

I have one, and my son has one. I have probably 1000-1100 rounds through mine, without any failures. It's a bit small for my hands, and not the most accurate of guns, but it hasn't failed or done anything weird.

Because the slide is made of Zamak it could be a point of failure (braking), but then again, I only have a little over 1K rounds through mine. My wife really likes it, as it fits her hands just right.

If you plan on shooting it "a lot", I would seriously consider something like a Buckmark or a Ruger Mark III/IV. I bought mine because it looks like my Walter P99, just miniaturized, but there are better target pistols out there, to be sure.

Thanks for the info Dudemeister! I didn't know that the slide was made of Zamak. That's a deal breaker for me. I have two Ruger MKIV,s & a SR22 which handle my high round counts with ease, but always looking for another plinker so I can give my SR22 a break once in a while. (lost count of rds fired through my SR22, I'd say it's upwards of 15,000, all bulk 22's) My MKIV's are more for serious shooting, so they get the mini mags. LOL

Got two without ANY issues. Shoots any ammo with a couple failures every now and again usually my wife not gripping properly but the gun works great.I know I said any issues but .22 ammo is sometimes picky as we all know.

I had one years ago. When I first bought it I couldn't get through a mag without malfunctions. That first range trip someone told me to break it in with CCI mini mags. Ran a few hundred through the gun and it shot those fine.

After that it would run well with the CCI and decent with the bulk ammo. I wouldn't call it a reliable gun, but it was reliable enough to not aggravate me while plinking.

Slide broke on a good friend while he was shooting it. Came back and hit him in the forehead. Walther sent me another slide. Gun is accurate enough. Had a screw inside that kept coming lose (the gun, not me). I used loctite and it hasn’t happened since. At the time I bought it it was rather unique. Now there are other options . Rugers SR22 being one. I’d probably go that route if I was to buy another smallish .22 semi auto.

My son's first .22 pistol was an early version of the Walther P22. Along with his Remington Model 597 two of the worst firearms I have ever encountered. The P22 was incredibly finicky about ammo and had to be cleaned every 50 to 100 rounds or else it would stop working altogether. The rear sight kept coming loose as did the barrel extension (eventually had to buy him a standard length barrel just so the didn't have to use that part).

Maybe Walther has made some improvements to the P22 but I sure wouldn't want to waste my money on one to find out.

Two many negatives on the Walther, so I'm going to pass on it. I appreciate all the replies and info. I'll probably just get another SR22 or MKIV Lite. Both of those have been just fantastic. Will probably get the SR22 with the longer slide. Ruger is in a 4/6 month back order for their handguns right now according to my LGS.

The "Q" is not the same gun as the P22. It is bigger, no slide extension, no safety. Not saying it is better, just not the gun that people are talking about. From some YouTube reviews it seems much better,than the P22,(which Walther still makes).

I bought a used Walter P22. I found out why the guy sold it to me. I sold that Walther P22. It is the only gun I have ever sold. I only wish I had sold it sooner.
I replaced that Walther P22 with a Ruger Mark II. I ain’t selling my Ruger. Nuff said.
