I recently heard that the P99 in .40 had problems with the original 10 round mags with the orange followers. Supposedly there are new mags out now with blue followers that function better than the orange ones.

Would someone give me the skinny on this? Would Walther/Smith swap out my orange-followered mags for the blue ones? I can't seem to find any information on this. The C.S. rep didn't seem to know what the heck I was talking about....

thanks

Smith will switch them

Smith will switch them out for you free of charge. Give them a call.

Mylhouse,

If you click on the link below to my web site, you will find information, much of which came from walther GmbH, on the .40 mag issue as well as photos.

The rep you spoke with probably won't know the difference between the blue followers either.

Dr. Lunde and I have both worked on getting the correct info. ;)

Wow, Jim, that's a great site!

Was Doc Lunde a little peeved with what you said about getting an aftermarket .357sig barrel for the P99?;)

Not that he let on to. We had discussed it prior and after. As you read, I based my information directly on what Walther GmbH advised me directly. ;) Ken and I know the same engineer. He was one of the P99 designers.

Ken and I remain very good friends and enthuiastic Walther owners. He has his ideas, I have mine and we respect each others views and opinions.

I think we work well together for two guys that have never met face to face and are 3,000 miles apart. :D In many ways, my site would not be what it is today if it were not for Ken. He's my constant "proof reader". :D

I wish Ken and I could get together with our Walthers and have a range session sometime.

Hmmm... never heard of that problem... but then again, all my followers in my mags are blue...

See now you are getting me worried. I just bought a brand new in box SW99 from a dealer and it has the orange followers. Did Smith not change it for their guns? Or is it just a Walther thing? I just saw some Walther mag's in a shop for 40 a piece :what: as usual and they were the light blue followers. I havent had a missfeed or even a lockback yet, but have only put around 350 rounds though it so far. Should I be on the phone with Smith on monday morning???

If it were my pistol I would be. ;)

Don't be surprised if S&W doesn't know what your talking about, it's normal but then again, maybe someone brought them up to speed on this point.

Walther America, inside S&W will but may not swap out S&W mags for Walther mags.

See thats the thing, Ive not seen any SW99's with anything but orange followers. Been in a few gun stores looking at them and they all had them with orange. I knew about the Walther differences but thought the newest Smith's would follow suit. Dang it, why do i keep wishing I would have got that P99 in 9x19 instead of this SW99 in .40. Guess I need to quit looking at other guns and buy that P99.

Guess Ill call and see if I can get any word on the followers. If not Ill just use them for range mags and pick up a pair of Walther mags with blue followers.

I put another 100 though the pistol yesterday and not one problem yet tho.

Bowlcut,

You may never have a problem with your mags with the orange followers. I didn't with my Walther mags. I just called and asked if they could be replaced and the guy said yes so I went for the new ones with the blue followers at n/c. :D

Ill try to get time sometime this week to call Smith. See if they offer the same sorta service Walther extended to you. If they will exchange or send me new ones no problem. If not, Ill just find some used light blue mags somewhere on the market as 40 bucks new is a bit expensive IMHO.

I should have went with my first gut feeling and got the Walther 9.... Ive been totaly happy with the Smith tho...oh well live and learn

Give Kiesler's a try for Walther mags. They get $27.95 per for either .40 or 9mm. They sometimes run out but re-stock quite fast. Either way it beats $40 per. ;)
