Walther SP22 Thoughts

The Walther website lists four models, M1 through M4, with the M4 (target) being available in the Spring of '08. They seem to be calling the SP22 a new model (or perhaps they're just referring to the M3/M4). The M1 and M2 are at a decent price point (~$350), if they're good pistols. No price listed yet on the M3 or M4.

Any thoughts, likes, or dislikes on the SP22 platform? How might this pistol compare to other 22s from other manufacturers?

Well, it is a new gun.

Comsiderably better than the P22. Not sure how much if any of the SSP is carried over. Have not handled one myself yet but it (the M4) is on my list. It looks, from the internal photos, to be a little better than the Sig Trailside target model. Build quality looks to be a little lower than the Benelli MP90/95. Do like the low bore axis. Nice sleek lines something different from the regular stuff.

I know this thread was started back in November 2007, but if anyone is interested I have a bit more info on the Walther SP22 M2 version.

I was given the M2 version as a present. I also own a Walther P22 3" version. The two guns are not all that similar.

The P22 is double action and great for plinking around and has good accuracy for such a small gun.

The SP22-M2 is single action and with the 6" barrel that I have, it is very very accurate. Right out of the box I was able to place a 4" grouping at 50 yards without any adjustment of the sights.

The SP22 line is geared more towards target and competition shooting and it took a little getting used too. The trigger on the SP22-M2 is a two stage trigger that must be fully released before firing again.

I have not shot my SP22-M2 as much as I have my P22, but so far I really like the gun for shooting long range target. I have yet to take it hunting but wouldn't hesitate in doing so. I find that I go through much less ammo when taking it to the range. I don't know if it due to the action and the differences in the trigger pull or if it is because I seem to really enjoy shooting 50 to 75 yards with the gun and being able to place tighter groupings that are not even possible with the P22. By far the SP22 is far more accurate at longer ranges which I think says a lot because the P22 is still very accurate itself.
 
I'll wait a year and see how it shakes out before jumping into one. The P22's were crap (IMO and that of others, too) so hopefully the next year or so will show the SP22 to be either junk or a good gun.

I would think that to be a wise stance.

I have only had one issue with my P22, but that was due to not cleaning it good enough after a weekend of heavy use. I also purchased mine after the clip issues were worked out.

So far I have had no issues with the SP22, but I have not had it long enough to get enough rounds through it to trigger the issues that usually pop up if they are going to. I only have 5oo rounds through my SP22 so far.
 
looks funky, but workable.
I have a love/hate thing with my P22 (spits hot brass at my face) so I'm weary of any walthers.

I like the aesthetics. Any more funky looking and I'd get a Whitney Wolverine or a Neos.
 
ShooterX: Yes it is funky looking. The first time I took it too the range, I must have had 10 or so people come up to me asking what it was.

When it was purchased for me, she told the gun shop that I go to that she wanted to order "That new Walther, you know the one that looks like a Ray Gun"
 
Just an FYI, was really interested in the SP22 but live in Cali. Talked to Walther USA today, the firearm is submitted and they hope to have it on the California approved list before the end of the year
 
I don't understand California. The SP22 M1, M2, M3 don't have a threaded barrell so there is not a suppression option for them.

I wonder if it is just all firearms are immediately put on the "assult weapons" ban and then they make the manufacturer jump through hoops.
 
For the people who own SP22s. How easy are they to take down and clean? From what I've heard about the Ruger MkIIIs and some other 22 target pistols they are terrible to take down and clean.
 
Walther SP22-M3

I have never owned a competition pistol myself, but I do have a few friends that compete and I've had the pleasure of firing a Sig Trailside PL22, and a Hammerli 208. Quality wise, I do have to hand it to Walther, they came as close as you can get for around the $300-400 price range. You obviously get what you pay for when you're in the market for the big dog $1,500-3,000 range however, for a low price, you really can't afford not to own one. This pistol is very light weight, for a 6" barrel. I have only put 50 rounds through the SP22, so far. I will post again, when I have the chance to put more through it.
 
I am into a bit of competition shooting. I dont own SP 22 but have tried it out. I think its a bit of many things, so I would put it beside a Buckmark, Ruger and likes of such. Not a serious target pistol but good enough for some local fun matches. Its also good and accurate enough for small game. Lighter than both Buckmark and Ruger, I think it is a good choice to pack along.
