Here I come. I got a job out there and will be heading that way on the 4th of April. I used to live there for 3 years, lived in Columbia and worked at Fort Meade. I will be heading back to the same general area. I didn't have any firearms then so I didn't pay attention to anything related while I was there. Anybody got any good info for that area? Gun shows, crazy laws, good places to shoot, sources of lead, etc? Thanks.

Welcome to Maryland, though it is NOT a good state for gun owners.
Just to answer some of your questions. Forget Md. gunshows, unless you have some idle time on your hands. The worthwhile gun shows are in York and Harrisburg, Pa. and the Nations Gun Show in Virginia.

When you have a few minutes, check out:
http://www.marylandshallissue.org/ and
http://www.msrpa.org/

And for other questions and information, you can check out the Maryland section of Hometown on AR15.com

We are happy to have you. It's great to have another 2nd Amendment supporter.

Congrats on the job Lenny. I just spent a few days near Cumberland and it was a very nice area. I hear it's not a real friendly gun state but hope things won't be too bad.

Maryland is quickly following in the footsteps of Illinois, Mass., NJ and Cali as far as being unfriendly towards firearms.

As to the regular stuff, well, Md has their own AW Ban, magazine restriction to 20 rds or less, but grandfathered mags are OK. The good news is: It ain't Cali. I understand that Md is surprisingly Class III friendly.

Welcome!

Maryland has no ban on so called "Assault rifles."

There is an Assault Pistol Ban which bans things like Tec-9's.

You may posess as many high cap magazines as you wish. 30 rounds, 40 rounds....whatever. However they may not be transferred within the state. You can bring them with you. You can reside in Maryland and buy them in another state and bring them back.

Virtually no ccw without meeting very discretionary criteria.

No wierd ammo rules of any kind.

7 day waiting period on handguns and scary loking "assault rifles". One gun a month rule on these also. All sales must go through an FFL or State Police.

Other rifles and shotguns are "cash and carry" with NICS check. Face to face sales of these guns are okey dokey.

No firearms owner i.d. cards or similar silliness.

+1 on the York, PA show and the Dulles show. I'm always disappointed with MD shows.
Class 3 friendly for sure. Go figure.

Sigh....more bashing of a state from someone who doesn't live here. The situation in MD is no where as dire as some of the places you just mentioned. In fact, there hasn't been one significant advance down the gun control path in the last 5 years and we've beaten back some doozies of bills.

Please don't talk about stuff that you don't have a clue about.

Why do people feel the need to talk about things like this, when they obviously have no idea in hell what they're talking about?

It's really starting to bother me.

But Norton and Spot77 are correct - other than a virtual ban on ccw, we're not exactly a bad place to live, in terms of RKBA activities.

Layusn1 - I'm in Columbia - if you ever need a shooting buddy, gimme a holler and we'll see what we can set up. Always looking for more folks to hit the range with.

Kingpin, I used to live by Jeffers Hill Elementary, over by Rocky Run Inn, Footed Ridge Rd. to be exact.

There is a sheriff's deputy from California Maryland on my forum. He said no real worries, bring everything I've got. It is nice that there is a indoor range, On Target, Near where I used to/will be working but they are a bit pricey and no rifle there. I could always use a shooting buddy, my family won't be joining me until July so I will have lots of free time.

layusn1,

FWIW, On Target is no more expensive than anywhere else around here....so the convenience factor ought to more than make up for it. I'm a member and the $200 a year is nothing compared to what I would spend in non-member fees to shoot there. Also, if you wait until the members' only sale in November, you can sometimes make most of your fees back in savings on the cost of the handguns that night.

If you want to shoot rifles in there, it sounds like a good excuse to get a 9mm AR to me :D

What exactly do you guys mean when you say Class III friendly? How is MD class III friendly?

Layusn1 - I'm right down the road from the locations you mentioned - I can walk to Jeffers Hill in about 15 minutes. (ok 20, but I'm a big boy, gimme a break!)

And yea, you can bring what you've got. Like Spot & Norton said, we're not nearly as bad as some of these other folks want to have you believe. We do have waiting periods, and one-gun a month, but so what?

And as far as On Target goes, I'm a member as well, so if you'd like to check it out sometime I'd be glad to have ya along. They are pricey, but Norton nailed it - they're super convenient. The next closest place that I know of to shoot is Hap Baker in Westminster, and that's a little bit of a hike to shoot at as often as one would like. Still a great place though. And if you do get a 9mm AR to shoot at OT, you gotta let me shoot it a little! I've never shot one (.223 or pistol caliber) and I've been dying to try. :D

Oreo - Class III refers to full-auto or other NFA stuff (suppressors, short-barreled rifles and shotguns, and AOW's (any other weapons)) Some states consider them a no-no, but Maryland is one of the states where as long as you can go through the hoops like everyone else who owns them, you're good to go. Kinda flies in the face of the picture some of the commenters here paint of the gun rights situation in MD, huh?

I am so spoiled here, my range charges $50 a year per person or $80 for family. It costs $2 a day to shoot. If I bring a guest they get charged $2 as well. They give you all the paper targets you want to punch holes in, all the clays you can shoot, bench rests, spotting scopes, and their ammo is the same price as anywhere else...no markup. $25 FFL transfers and any firearm he can order will be yours for 10% over whatever he managed to get for it. He has 3 handgun lanes, 3 IDPA handgun lanes, 4 rifle lanes, skeet and trap (one of them is voice activated...kinda cool, just say pull and it does). I am REALLY going to miss that place.

Your more than welcome to shoot my AR, I don't have a 9mm upper for it though...gotta find a different place to shoot it. I am more of a rifle guy myself so I don't mind making a drive to be able to shoot. I drive 45 minutes each way now. I would love to have a concealed carry, especially since I am often bound to a wheelchair making self defense a little harder. Unfortunately, as with everything else there are trade-offs. Have a job and make a bunch of money in MD or be unemployed in a CCW state and not able to afford ammo for a firearm anyway...lol.
